I already gave up cheerios for myself because I prefer to not ingest folic acid, so I'm not sure if I'll ever give them to my son to start with (because he very well could have the same MTHFR gene mutation that I do)

@lindseykaye: Thank you for the link! Otherwise I don't know what else to pack for DS for school snacks :-)

Then it led me to remember this video... so tired of the food scares.

@autumnleaves: I have seen this all over social media and wonder if we are getting the balance right between information and fear mongering. Honestly even water isn't safe anymore with reports of the way plastic water bottles are stored in warehouses and chemicals leaching into the water. At this rate starving to death might be our "healthiest" option

I have a relatively picky eater and he will eat a handful of Cheerios as a snack and recently started eating some different kinds of breakfast bars. I don’t want to limit his breakfast choices unnecessarily!

@autumnleaves: I would be very skeptical of a statement like that from a doctor. The science to pinpoint what caused a specific cancer frankly does not exist at this time.

@periwinklebee: Unfortunately I don't really know of any other watchdogs. You can always compare the current EPA to EU regulatory limits (which tend to be more conservative) but I don't know that you can get information on what levels are detected through screenings because if it's made and sold exclusively in the USA it's going to be according to EPA/FDA/USDA regulations and not EU limits.

@lindseykaye: This article made me very disappointed in EWG. I worry that the EPA standards are outdated and potentially much too high. But there is a huge difference between 2 and 0.01. The fact that they took the California threshold, the most conservative one out there, and divided it by 100 - which isn't even justified by an order of magnitude by the source they cite to justify it - makes me think they just chose whatever threshold would mean conventional oats failed and organic oats passed. I've heard before that they have questionable ties to industries that sell organic products. Do you know of better watchdogs?

Glad the article and the explanations within were helpful. I know this is such a personal decision for everyone - it's already very hard to know what is 'safe' and what is not without advocacy groups and worse "astroturfing" style groups causing a potential alarm and confusion where there doesn't need to be.
In my opinion, based on all the facts I've read, you're not doing harm if you continue to consume these products - to yourself or your kids. If you choose to switch then that's fine! But I would hate for people to feel guilty for previously or currently purchasing these items based on a 'study'.

From what I understand about farming, manufacturers typically buy grain off of farms and not own the farms themselves. Unless you go organic, a brand without a high level now could have a high level later unless the manufacturer implements screening just because they could buy from some other farm.

@hellobeeboston: Are you switching to something organic? My thought is that this "study " only looked at 45 products...but if Quaker Oats contain a high level of glyphosphate I'm assuming any other similar brand of oats does too. Unless it's organic.

@autumnleaves: How was the doctor able to determine that??

@lindseykaye: Thanks for sharing this - I appreciate the comment in it that the EPA threshold was set in 1993 and not recently.

One of my friends has been fighting breast cancer and the doctor could identify that something 8 years ago triggered it - so she has thought hard about what she consumed a lot of 8 years ago (it wasn't cheerios or oats) but it makes me feel like eventually the research will be out there that things we thought were OK are not.
That being said everything is problematic or good for you at some point or another it seems and I know its not healthy to stress about it.

The biggest problem with pesticides is the cumulative effect from everything we consume throughout a day, a week, a year, a lifetime. So yes we have been switching our diet gradually over to as local/organic/ humane as I can source. I don’t think we need to wait another 50 years for the research to tell me that various additives in processed food are bad for me.

To @lindseykaye's point, I use articles like this to see if this has been scientifically validated (it hasn't been - no scientific journal presence, no additional research from any other groups), and whether the group has an agenda (EWG is an advocacy organization - doesn't mean they can't be right, but they also have an agenda to promote). This reminds me of the artificial sweetners scare from a bunch of years ago where everyone was saying it was killing rats, but no one was mentioning that the rats had to be fed pounds of the stuff for anything toxic to happen. So yeah, no, not going to change things.

A lady at Target returned some unopened oatmeal and pulled the store manager aside to tell her those items should not be restocked.

Cereal and oatmeal is usually not a breakfast or snack item in my house anyway and this study for sure makes me think twice about consuming these.

I will not be changing what I feed my kids or myself. The organization who put out this information dramatically exaggerated the risk and findings here.
This was a great article I read today that explains what was actually found and the risks. https://slate.com/technology/2018/08/glyphosate-from-monsantos-weed-killer-roundup-in-breakfast-cereal-isnt-something-to-worry-about.html

I'm in food safety and food science. My work runs the analytical testing that screens for pesticides (and numerous other compounds) in various foods. None of us here have plans to change how we eat considering this information.

Is anyone going to give cheerios or oatmeal to their kids less now that the EWG came out with this report? https://www.ewg.org/childrenshealth/glyphosateincereal/#.W3bqdJXru73

Here is a USA Today article about it too
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/08/15/breakfast-foods-cereal-weed-killer/999167002/
