Oh! And the best tip that I try to remember is a nutritionist tip that was shared with Mrs Bee.

"try to think of their weekly intake vs their daily intake".

When I think of it that way i realize LO eats a very healthy & balanced diet!

Yeahhh my LO isn't here yet and I'm already stressing about her lunches >.< Good grief! I see all these awesome bento boxes on HB, and well-balanced meals... I mean gosh, I can barely manage to feed DH and I balanced meals!! And my daycare doesn't provide lunches, so it will be a great opportunity to feed her healthier foods, but I'm definitely worried that I'm not up to the task :/

Oh my goodness yes! LO just barely started solids and I am already stressed about making sure she eats a balanced diet once she starts eating more than one meal a day. I am not always great about feeding myself, so the thought of choosing her foods is terrifying!

@sorrycharlie: @regberadaisy: Yes, I have been successful with getting LO to take her iron supplement with her Greek yogurt in the mornings. It's the only way she'll take it. But she's supposed to have the supplement 2x a day and I only give it to her once.

@Running Elley: Yes! I am constantly reading labels and trying to find things with iron because she has low iron. But that means she also needs to eat vitamin C to help with iron absorption. And we are trying to eat less meat, so I have to factor in that. I spend more time worrying and meal planning for her tiny meals than our full meals. Plus, she doesn't eat as much as what I've seen other babies her age do, so I worry about that.

You are not alone!

I was borderline anemic during pregnancy AND my brother is anemic has thalassemia. So it should not have been a surprise to us that LO is anemic and has thalassemia trait.
Most peds do a blood prick test for iron at the 9 or 12 m well visit!

@sorrycharlie: bahaha I have a list on my phone of what food has easily absorbed iron vs non easily absorbed iron. Thankfully because of how dangerously low her levels were (as in if supplements did not raise it ped was going to admit her) Dh is very on board about it. So we're both very conscious about feeding her food that has high iron content.

@regberadaisy: I obsessively read the back of baby food jars to read the iron %..lol. I make most of her food, but buy certain things for iron! DH doesn't understand it and thinks I"m a little wacky - "here, give her chicken and stars cause it has X% of iron, that only has 2%!"

@Running Elley: My supply dropped big time after she turned one, don't ask me how. So we started transitioning her bottles to whole milk around 12.5 months. By 13 months ish she was fully on whole milk at daycare. I know a lot go cold turkey but she was MSPI so we wanted to go very slow.

@regberadaisy: I've heard it many many places before so I was curious :) Did you start your LO on whole milk right at one? E is FF so we're planning on weaning to milk at 1. If he was BF I would probably want to go a little longer but formula is so expensive!

@hilsy85: @Running Elley: this is just what *I* believe. I think if you're BFing or givng formula till one then the majority of their calories comes from that. The solids are just extra, practice etc. If you plan to stop the BFing/formula by one then you should slowly amp your LO up to 3 meals a day by the time you quit BFing/formula. And most LOs I know were up to 3 meals by one. In theory they eat more to accommodate for the reduced milk/formula.

This is what I think at least.

M is 14 months and BF 2x, 3 meals, 2 snacks (sometimes more) and 15+ ounces of whole milk per day. I did notice a increase in her solids intake once we stopped giving BM/formula at daycare.

@butterbean: YES. I find this SO confusing.

@regberadaisy: but if it's just fun til 1, then the calories from solids don't really matter til they're 1? What if you wean at 1? Are all those calories supposed to come from whole milk/milk alternative? Or is LO all of a sudden supposed to be eating tons of solids? That's what I don't get!

yea! i agree with @hilsy85

it's hard finding the right balance...i've read that once LO starts taking solids, he doesn't need as much breastmilk/formula but then everyone is saying breastmilk/formula should be the primary source of nutrients up until 1 year...this is where i'm torn - how much solids do i give to ensure he's eating enough? sigh

I did, but it gets better I promise. We try to avoid processed food within reason, but sometimes it's just not entirely possible based on our lifestyle. I just try and get at least one protein and veggie in at every meal and not let her fill up on carbs every time she eats. I also find batch cooking large quantities of some of our fave go-to's for her make my life much less stressfull. Eggs with meat and veggies frozen in happy little single servings, perfect. When all else fails I pull out some fritatta and she's a happy girl.

It is. I feel like we have a really good handle on "healthy" and I'm probably too anal about it which creates more stress. I also feel like what she will be eating is always at the forefront of my mind. Whereas for DH it might be 85% of the time. Like yesterday ILs ended up coming over for dinner bc FIL was helping DH with hte fireplace. So we ended up grabbing subs....well baby can't eat subs for dinner! So I had to figure out dinner and today's lunch for LO. Which was grabbing something from the take home food bar from Wegmans. Which thankfully isn't that bad.

And I'm anal about making sure she gets a protein, veggie, starch and fruit at every meal! Breakfast is just a whole 'nother headache bc lately she is refusing eggs. And add in the pressure that she is anemic so we have to make sure she eats something iron fortified at each meal.

This is why I'm reluctant to give up BFing at 14 months!!!

@NovBaby1112: Lol my LO isn't BF but I can totally see having that fear if he was!

@hilsy85: Oh thank goodness. After I posted this I was like...these people are going to think I'm a nutjob. Lately E has been wanting to eat whatever we're eating and it's really made me reevaluate what I'm eating too! I thought that he'd be like...at least 2 before he could process the thought "Why is mommy eating that while I'm eating this? I want that!" But he's totally already picked up on it. I really don't want to mess him up completely to where he's not used to/doesn't want to eat a well balanced diet.

And then I think things like....should we all be GF? Should we all be paleo?? What is healthy??? Gah.
