Has anyone recently had their Counsyl bills adjusted? I just got a huge bill for $1200 but the advertised rate in my Obgyn's packet was $99 or less. :-(

@Torchwood: Good to know, thanks!! I know costs of medical services get weird with insurance factored in, but I wish this sort of information were more readily accessible.

@Shivani: Thanks! I still need to talk to my doctor about it, but my husband and I are both planning on taking the test. I hope Counsyl is always able to remain so affordable, it's a great service!

@nanilani Glad you got the information you wanted. I am a mom of twins and Director of Women's Health at Counsyl. It's extremely important to us that screening remains affordable, so if you have any additional concerns, please email support@counsyl.com and feel free to ask for me (Shivani)!

Also, for what it's worth, their more advanced screening is only $199. That's what we had done for me in August.

Here's what I got back from Counsyl:
"Our pricing policy has not changed. The average pocket cost of our Family Prep Screen with methodology genotyping is $99.00 for commercial insurance holders. If your patient responsibility were to exceed that, we would contact you before finalizing the order. We are in network with your insurer and frequently work with them for patients taking our Family Prep Screen."

This confirms what everyone has told me (yay!). I wish they'd mention it on their website, but it's nice to have it in writing.

I'm still waiting for a response from Counsyl, but I find your answers very reassuring! My insurance company was no help, naturally. I'd like to have the genetic screening done, so I'm really hoping this turns out to be financially feasible!

I did it earlier this year, and that proved true for me. It was 100% worth it - I was testing for Fragile X as my mother is a carrier, and I found out that I didn't have that but WAS a carrier for another genetic issue - we were then able to test DH for that and it gave me a lot of peace of mind - he's not a carrier!

Mine was in 2014, but I agree with you that I would call first because if it goes through insurance it can be a hefty bill.

Thanks for all the replies! Did any of you have the test done in 2014? Not seeing any anecdotal evidence since 2013 or earlier and it not being mentioned on their website makes me wonder if they changed their policy.

I left a message with Counsyl asking about their policy but am still waiting to hear back. I was too impatient to wait all weekend 0:) I'm nervous to rely on the test being $99 without a written record of it.

I had mine (the limited 13 disease test) done through my RE's office. The RE charged me $50 and then billed insurance. Insurance didn't pay, so I just ended up paying the $50!

I did - and only paid $99! I freaked a bit when i received the explanation of benefits from my insurance company and it said i was responsible for all $1500 of it but they only billed me for $99 as promised.

I did, and the $99 was true! At first my insurance refused to cover it and Counsyl sent me a bill for $1500. I sent back to them the documentation from the insurance company saying it wasn't covered and Counsyl adjusted my cost to $99. I paid it, and later on my insurance company agreed to cover it. Counsyl sent me a refund check for the $99. You have to stay on top of it but I found them to be true to their word and very helpful.

Has anyone done the Counsyl Family Prep (pre-conception) test recently and gotten the supposed $99 OOP guarantee? I see it mentioned everywhere but their website, so I'm wondering if this is outdated information. My gynecologist suggested CF carrier screening along with any other possible family health issues. I don't know of any and DH and I haven't asked around b/c we're not ready to share our TTC status with family, so it's nice the Counsyl test covers so many diseases. My insurance won't cover the test even though Counsyl is in-network. I'm struggling to get a handle on what our OOP costs would be!
