@azjax: I was thinking of doing that, thanks fo confirming it helps! Her sister has a cold too so I know it's only a matter of time before she has that too.

When my eczema flares up, it is horribly itchy for the most part. It only ever becomes painful if the skin becomes broken. I recommend running a humidifier for your LO during the night time. It helps decrease the duration and intensity of flare ups for DS and me.

@kitty: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: oh now I feel even worse for not preventing this! Just in the last day I noticed the scratching but I'm sure she's been doing it longer. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Same as @kitty: . I don't remember when I developed excema, but as a kid it was excruciating. I itched all over and no amount of scratching or rubbing helped. Once I scratched my skin raw that was painful too. Staying cool and dry helped. My parents would apply Rx strength ointment and I would lay on my bed still as not to disturb anything for awhile. It's tough as a kid because you want to move around.

I can't speak for babies but I had pretty bad eczema as a kid and it hurt if it was hot and sweaty, if it rubbed together (like at my thighs) or if I scratched it enough that it got all scabby. Otherwise the itching was just insane but oatmeal baths helped as well as the creams you are already using.

My 14 month old has had mild excema, managed by keeping up with the aquaphor. This week it's suddenly gotten much worse and she has a rash in a bunch of places. I just started using hydrocortisone last night and will cut out all soaps from bath (which I should have done earlier, I know).

But she has been so so cranky and seems in pain in addition to itchy. I'm wondering how uncomfortable or painful an excema flare up is, or if it's just a coincidence and she is also teething (the canines are up next and probably swollen but it's hard to see into her mouth). And what do you do to ease the discomfort until the hydrocortisone and extra aquaphor and gentle cleanser can work?

- from, mom who's up with the baby for the third time tonight.
