Hard to say? Hubby is one of 3 boys and we have a girl and his brother has a girl. Looking further back though our families are both fairly split.

In DH's generation every single one of his cousins are all boys except ONE girl. Now all those cousins have ALL had girls. Except the one girl cousin (first child was a girl!) is now expecting a boy.

The boy chromosome comes from the male, so who knows!

The 50/50 number is totally over the entire population. I think it's genetics, and timing. I know some debate the Shettle's Method, but whatever you call it, there is scientific evidence that male & female sperm behave a bit differently. Soooo, I think it's the genetics you bring to the table, and the timing of BDing.

ETA: We have NO pattern in our family. After thinking about it, we're literally split boy/girl, 50/50 ... many generations back. It's odd.

I think it is over a large population. It might be something like 48/52, but that's close enough in my book.

I think like others said, some men must make more X or Y sperm. If it was truly 50/50 then why would some men have something like 4 or 5 of one gender?

I read in a book about the science of being pregnant that if a man is one of all boys, then there is some genetic predisposition for him to have all boys as well.

It's definitely statistical. I think it's interesting to see waves/trends of all one gender though. For example, DH is one of 3 boys, we have 1 boy and DH's brother has 2. We were over the moon to find out that out second is a girl.

Also, I belong to an expectant mothers group here and, at one of the early meetings I was the only woman (out of 8) expecting a girl!

I dunno, but there hasn't been a girl born into SO's family in 76 years. E was the family's last shot for this generation to get a girl (unless we decide have a second) but he was the 10th boy in a row.

I feel like I've heard that some men naturally produce more x or y sperm. Which is why you sometimes see families with a ton of only one gender. I think that the 50/50 thing is over all for the population. Not for any specific guy.

I know the appropriate term here is "sex" not gender but I didn't know how to word it other than "Is sex 50/50?" And that sounds weird.

I know the chances of having a boy or a girl are basically 50/50, but sometimes I can't help wondering if sometimes genetics are at play.

I'm expecting a little boy (so excited!!!!) in February. DH is the baby of six grandchildren by his paternal grandmother. This will be her 7th great grandchild and also 7th great grandson. ALL boys. She also had 3 boys (one being DH's father) and 5 of the 6 grandchildren are boys, just DH's sister being the odd one out. And she's definitely an odd one out sometimes. His granny was noticeably disappointed that this baby wasn't a girl (Ugh. We can get into that later).

It just seems like its genetic. Is it really up to chance that there are SO many boys in this family?
