I think it really depends on whether it was a challenge or not. For people that have a hard time because of extenuating circumstances, it is a huge accomplishment absolutely worth celebrating.

For people that breezed through school and are already moving on, graduation is like the farewell party.

I didn't want to walk for my college graduation because I didn't see the point. But my grandparents really wanted to be there (they came from a small farming community and my grandpa was the first college graduate. So I endured the ceremony and walked. Ironically, DH doesn't want to walk because he finds it embarrassing that he's so much older than the rest of the graduates.

@Mamaof2: it depends on many things. For some people it is a huge deal they might be from a family with many issues that they overcame to graduate high school.
Having said that i do feel that the parties are overdone lately and so many of the prom dresses are inappropriately revealing

I worked at a high school where the graduation rate was 50%. I was so proud of all my students who graduated. It was a HUGE accomplishment for them. I know some who were working non stop after school and taking care of siblings. I had a few teen moms that struggled to
Make it to school every day. Life was not easy for some of those kids and graduating high school meant they persevered through some crazy circumstances. It would have been way easier for most of them to quit and just start working but they stuck it out. I cried at every single ceremonh thinking about how hard my students worked.

For my own kids I would hope they wouldn’t have those struggles but we have some of our own. We are dealing with dyslexia and other learning differences and I think I will be really proud of my kids knowing how much work they had to put in to over come those differences. I don’t think they need a giant expensive party but I think it’s a big accomplishment and should be recognized and celebrated in some way.

In our family, it was (and will be) treated as a milestone, but not necessarily an accomplishment because it’s something that is expected.

It's definitely an accomplishment, especially for a kid. Think about it, you can't go to college without graduating and you can barely get a job without graduating high school. I think it's worthy of a celebration.

Yeah, it's a big deal. A lot of people don't go on to college or get a masters, or more than that. So, it is a big deal. In the future I can imagine less people will go on to a 4-year college b/c of rising costs, so graduating high school is the first step in a career for them.

Why is a master's graduation a bigger deal than a high school one? I was working full time and getting married right after, so to me, a master's was basically like putting on deodorant, but high school, yeah, that was huge. It's really the first huge transition in life, and a lot of hard work goes into that for most people, so yeah, it's a big deal and should be celebrated. I'm not big on massive parties personally, so I wouldn't throw one for anything really, but it's absolutely a huge milestone that deserves commemoration.

It’s a huge milestone in my opinion. The kids are now considered an adult and most are leaving home to go to college afterwards. I think that’s deserving of a party!

Oh my gosh, yes, it's a huge deal! I don't think it's that graduating is "unique" but rather it's the benchmark for ending the first major segment of your life and the capstone of 13 years of K-12 education. Although I received a bachelor's and master's degree, my high school graduation felt the most significant to me.

@Mamaof2: I like the parties but haaaaate graduation ceremonies. (ETA, in general, not just hs ones, haha. I'm a grump about them!) I think the parties are more about the end of their real childhood. From then on many move out, join the military, move away for college, pay their own bills. Not everyone goes to college or anything else where they will have a graduation/celebration again.

I don't know, I have a college degree but I kind of find that language offputting!

It’s a milestone and should be celebrated as such. I did not have a graduation party but my parents took me out to a nice dinner. (Same as college).
That being said, I think the recent implementation of kinder graduation ceremony and pre-K graduation ceremony is ridiculous. We did not have those growing up!!

@dolphin: I agree, I think much of it is for the parents (much like a 1st birthday). As a parent I totally think I’ll deserve a party if I survive my kid's high school years. It’s a milestone for the kids and parents.

I went to a pressure cooker high school and found it to be a socially isolating and unpleasant experience. All I wanted to do was escape to college and put it behind me.

My parents insisted on throwing a graduation party which I did not want. I thought it was dumb. I did not feel that graduating from high school was an accomplishment; it was simply an exercise in meeting people's expectations.

I hope I can find some better balance for my children and that they don't look back on high school as four years of somewhat wasted time.

My parents got their Ivy League acceptance out of it though, so at least there's that.

These boards attract such a niche group of women (I may be overreaching but I would say in general solid middle class / college educated people). I think in that niche high school graduation is probably not that big of a deal.

Neither of my parents completed college. No one on my mother's side siblings wise had and I'm the oldest cousin so I was the first to go onto higher education. It was a huge deal to them.

I agree for me it is more of a milestone but it's a big one. I'll be excited for my kids and celebrate it but I'm also excited for preschool graduation this fall and my child hasn't really achieved anything to earn that designation ;)

I've graduated from high school, undergrad, and law school. It was never a question I would graduate from all three, and I never felt particularly proud or accomplished about any of them. I only had a party for high school graduation, and it felt like a big/exciting deal to me because it was the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood!

It is a big deal! It’s an accomplishment that may be easy for many but isn’t for everyone. It’s also the end of years spent with the same people who you then may see infrequently to never. I always saw it as a mark of passing into adulthood. I put it in the same camp as a quince or sweet sixteen.

It is a big deal! This may be the last time that some kids see each other again, or be in the same room with the peers they grew up with. Everyone's life will change in some capacity. I beleive in celebrating every milestone to some degree. I will not throw my son a graduation party for Kindergarten and 8th grade, but we will have a small celebration.

also, i agree with previous posters who have mentioned the privilege inherent in equating graduating high school with blowing your nose. It is not an easy accomplishment for all students, and many communities (including the one I grew up in) it is not taken for granted and is very often the highest formal education some people receive. College isn't for everyone.

I think it's a milestone to celebrate. My family uses Graduation Parties as College/Moving out Showers where you get dorm or home supplies that you don't have, cash, groceries; and they use them as a smaller scale family reunion that happens a little more often than family reunions for now.

I think it is a big deal, in that you are ending your childhood and becoming an adult, going to college or to the workforce, moving out on your own (or hopefully), etc.
Graduation parties are helping you prepare for that next step.
