@Mrs.Someone: Haha! Otherwise I would've said the same - like having a baby on Christmas or something. Womp womp, everyone's always busy! ;)

@Mrs.Someone: But it'll be on a different day every year, going by the western calendar :)

@ChelseaRose: so personally, if it were me, id choose a different day. If anything, a religious Jew would always be fasting and in services on a YK birthday, and that would suck :)

@ChelseaRose: From what I read, orthodox jews will have a bigger issue with a) induction or b) having a baby on shabbat than a baby on YK. So I wouldn't worry at all.

@Mrs.Someone: I guess I should have specified that I will be exactly 39 weeks on YK and that's the day my OB was going to schedule me for (unless I go into labor sooner than that). It would be on the 23rd during daytime hours.

Absolutely not. Baby's birth is a good (and holy) thing no matter what day it happens. And as someone else said, YK isn't a "bad" day - it's just culturally solemn because you are meant to be in contemplation about what you did "wrong" last year and how you can be a better person the upcoming year.

In general, religious Jews practice the written laws of "health and life above all else" (ie customs or ritual) - childbirth included.

This kind of stuff intrigues me so I just did some googlng. Something I found says Jesus was actually born on Yom Kippur, so I figure, must not be too bad of a day!! (Christmas was chosen to align with a pagan holiday, it's known Jesus wasn't actually born on December 25th and was more likely born in the fall when flocks of sheep would actually be out with shepards.)http://bibleprophecy.net/birth.htm

I think a baby born on any day would be considered a blessing in the Jewish faith. If you have another option, I'd consider picking a different day. But if it doesn't matter to you, then go for it?

You (usually) can't schedule when a baby is born, so in that sense, it's not bad. But I think if you have a choice, then it's better to choose a different day. On the other hand, if you're not religious, then maybe it doesn't matter to you?

Also, just FYI, all religious rules are suspended for health reasons. Orthodox Jews will drive to the ER on Yom Kippur if there is an emergency.

Yom Kippur is a day of atonement. Observers atone for and are forgiven for the sins they've committed throughout the year. It is also the day God inscribes their fate for the year. I doesn't sound to me like a "bad" day.

I'm not Jewish, but I do know that the "holiday" doesn't begin until sunset. Will it be on the 22nd or the 23rd?

I'm hoping for a vbac, but my OB wants to schedule a RCS when I'm 39 weeks. I'm not Jewish these days (more agnostic than religious), but my side of the family is. I don't want to ask my various relatives about it because I don't want to announce my childbirth plans in advance and my parents are not religious enough to know. If it's a good day or neutral, then I'll leave it as is, but if it's considered to be a bad day, then I'll ask for a day or two later.
