Lo was really small-- she wore nb sizes for almost 3 mos! So it really depends on your baby

Like others said, don't register for clothes. I let people buy what they wanted, and returned the things I didn't like. That allowed me to get things in the smaller sizes since most people bought larger stuff. DS is 11w and just now fitting well in 0-3.

I was told by so many people not to get many NB or 0-3 clothes, and I shouldn't have listened! My son was pretty big at birth - 8 lbs 5 oz and 21 inches - and he was in NB clothes until right around 4 weeks. He'll probably grow out of 0-3 right around 11/12 weeks.

I wouldn't register for clothes, but I'd take stock of what you have after your shower and get some NB/0-3 to have on hand in case you need them. Carters has a great return policy if you keep your receipts and tags. We had a few days in the early weeks where he'd go through 3 or 4 outfits in a day between blowouts/diaper leaks, spitting up, etc. and I was glad we had the extras!

I was asking a lot of people about this too, I guess it really depends on how big your baby is when he/she comes out!

I don't anticipate (so far at 34 weeks) a huge baby, so I do have a few NB size b/c some babies do fit into NB for a good while! But I def have more 0-3 and 3-6.

A lot of my clothes are hand me downs, so the extras I bought I'm just not cutting off tags/washing them yet.

I was expecting my son to be well over 8 pounds, but he was about 7 pounds 8 ounces at birth and I didn't like the way some of the larger items looked soooo big on him, so I dressed him in a few 0-3 month things. I used sleepers almost exclusively the first 6 months, though.

You really can't predict what you will need. I wouldn't register for clothes - you'll get them, and most will be 0-3mo. I had a small baby (6.5lbs at birth), and he wore NB for 7 weeks, and at 3.5 months is still mostly in 0-3mo. Have some NB on hand, but you can always buy more if your baby is small. I'd also be careful about buying too many 3-6 and 6-9 before baby gets here. I had to give away and lot of never worn stuff in those sizes because people gave us summer clothes, and it's almost Nov and he still can't wear them.

We are probably the exception, but LO was in preemie/newborn until 3 months. If we had registered for/bought a lot of 3-6 month clothes we would have not used them, because they would have been the wrong season. I am personally in the camp of buying 0-3 and waiting on all other clothing (except hand me downs! Take all the hand me downs!) until you are almost ready for them. Also, if people do give you clothing I would leave the tags on until you are actually ready to use it...that way you can exchange for correct season clothing if it turns out your baby isn't the predicted size.

It really depends on your baby. My son was born at 34 weeks and he wore preemie, newborn, 0 - 3 month, etc. He was in preemie about a month. Newborn more than a month and 0-3 months FOREVER! So it is very child specific. The good news, is it's very easy to buy more clothes once your LO arrives.

I think you need plenty of both! They outgrow those sizes so so fast, but they can go through a lot of outfits in a day between spit up and diaper blow outs. Also, I know a lot of people say you don't need newborn things, but I had a pretty average sized baby (6 pounds, 15 ounces) and she wore newborn clothes for six weeks.

I didn't register for clothes and still got a ton of them. One thing I wish though is that people had thought about seasons more. I had a September baby and I got a lot of summery three month outfits that never got worn.

I agree you probably want both. My guy is relatively big (95+ percentile in height and weight since birth) and definitely got use out of both sizes. We didn't get him out of all the 0-3 until he really was 3 months (though he FAR surpassed their size chart guidelines, the clothes still fit) and he's still in some 3-6 now at 5 months, though he's also in 6-9... I imagine an average sized baby would be in the clothes even longer.

Also - in my brief experience, footed sleepers are the one thing that really doesn't work if they're too big because their little legs don't stay in the garment legs. Maybe this is just my guy, but the footies are always the last thing he grows into for any given size! Onesies and pants are more forgiving.

Thank you everyone for the input. I did get some 0-3mo stuff as hand me downs so I'll have some of those. Since I'll have a winter baby, I'm planning on using mostly footies in the first 2 months instead of actual outfits so it should be ok if it's a little too big.

My 8 month old still fits in some 0-3 month clothes! I think you'll definitely need them. Unless you have an incredibly large baby, they'll get used! Many people skip newborn size but we got quite a bit of use out of them.

You never know how big your baby will be, but yes, 0-3 month stuff won't last long. Plus at that age they are just kinda staying home and not really in "outfits". Even if they are in an outfit, you often can't really see it because tehy are scrunched up in the carseat or someones arms.

By 3-6m they actually look cute! The only thing I didn't think about the first time around is the crawling stage. Its hard for girls to crawl in dresses and its nice to have their knees covered up when they do start to crawl.

@tororojo: I second what you said but for opposite reasons! My 13.5 month old still wears about 1/2 of her 9 month clothing!! I have to return pants I JUST bought for her because I decided to "size up" (18 month, she can wear 18 month shirts ¬ look ridiculous) & she was swimming in them. Saggy crotch & all lol. You just never know how big your baby will be!

ETA: I also agree that you probably won't need to register for clothes because people are going to buy them anyway. Thankfully I have a lot of mom friends & many of them tried to help out with getting bigger sizes too.

I'm gonna differ and say sure, skip the nb but if you do that you'll definitely want 0-3 for the first few months unless your baby is a giant! I would also steer clear of season specific stuff (but onesies and sleepers are fine!) in larger sizes because you never know how quickly the kid will grow- it varies so much by baby. All the wintery stuff we got for DD got regifted for that reason, even though it was sweet for people to plan ahead. (For reference, she was over 9 lbs/23 inches and wore 0-3 for a couple of months, then generally wore a size bigger than her age for the first year)

I'd skip the NB size but buy a little 0-3 and 3-6.

We had some of both, but the 3-6 months will last so much longer. I don't mind if her clothes are too big on her, it saves money in the long run. We still buy too big, and she fits a 3, but we buy a 4.

This question is for both the registry and for my personal shopping.
I am leaning on just buying size 3-6mo clothing because I've heard that babies grow out of the 0-3mo size really quickly and it's better to have stuff that is big on a newborn but will last longer.

Any advice regarding this? Thanks
