@turquoisemama: gotcha! :) Our lawns must be different. We always have little bunny pellets or patches of bird poop. I just figure it is outside, there’s really not much I can besides cover the whole yard in tarp to protect it. Surprised that you think bird poop is so much better! We deal with pigeon crap and it’s actually quite disgusting and laden with disease. I’d suggest putting up a fence or a sign indicating dogs are not welcome at all on your lawn and hopefully that’ll keep ppl off it!

By all means, put up a sign and talk to your neighbors about not letting their dogs go in your yard, but just know that you are going to be *that* neighbor that people avoid.

Also: squirrel poop, like rodent poop, is very small and in pellets. They also poop on the run or in a hollow tree, so you will rarely see a pile of poop and it's likely all over your yard anyway. My husband is a wildlife biologist. I know way too much about different kinds of animal poop.

@pinkcupcake: Well aside from the fact that dog poop is inherently just grosser than bird poop, it smells, and there’s certainly going to be more of it than a tiny bird occasionally landing and pooping, dog poop isn’t really processed in the environment the same way. Bird poop is naturally occurring and dog poop is an environmental pollutant that carries a lot more health risks. Obviously it’s better if the person picks it up but it still doesn’t belong in my yard.

@turquoisemama: how is bird poop different from dog poop? Genuinely curious.

And FWIW, I don’t like dogs taking craps on our lawn either. It’s annoying. But I understand that a dog is a dog, and many, many times, you can’t control where it goes potty. As long as the owners clean up after the dog immediately, I truly don’t see what else they could do 🤷‍♀️

@pinkcupcake: it’s kind of ridiculous that you would compare bird poop to dog poop. Totally different. And wild animals like squirrels and possums usually don’t just poop wherever out in the middle of an open area. They would poop in a secluded hidden area. It’s not that I think my grass is sterile, more the principle of someone respecting my property enough to keep their dog off. I spend a lot of time keeping my yard looking nice and I don’t need other people letting their dog pee or poop on it. This one particular incident, the dog clearly had soft almost diarrhea poop and I’m sure there was a residue so the thought of my daughter going out there and playing is super gross. But thanks for you opinion.

This thread makes me LOL. Do you really think dog poop is the worst thing to hit your lawn? Umm, you don’t think birds poop? Squirrels? Whatever else wanders around outside? Lol at ppl thinking their lawn is like, some pristine batch of sterile grass 😂😂😂

wow, as a dog owner this thread amazes me.
Exactly what @alphagam84 said: my dog needs to go on a long walk daily, and walking makes him poop. We keep him near the curb (ie: not in the middle of the yard) and we ALWAYS clean it up. I see the same behavior by all the other dog owners in our neighborhood, and have never had issues with "mystery poop" in my yard.

I guess it sort of annoys me that there is a cat who roams the neighborhood and poops in our yard, because then my dog rolls in it and I have to bathe him. But he's an outdoor cat, and living things have to poop -- I don't blame him or the owners, I'm just annoyed that my dog chooses to roll in it!

Eh, it grosses me out a bit if I really think about but it's just life. Animals are going to poop where they want to poop. At least with responsible dog owners the bulk of the poop is removed as opposed to roaming kitties and wildlife. :)

I don't really see what the problem is if they are picking it up and it's just on the edge. Sometimes you can't control where the dog needs to go, I've tried. Sometimes when I try to stop him and drag him somewhere else, he just goes mid stride while walking. When you gotta go, you gotta go!
We regularly have dogs that roam around in our neighborhood (no leash laws and some dogs kinda just roam around or escape) and poop on our property without their owners around so it's left there, granted its in the wooded part of our property where our dog goes too, and we don't really have a problem with it either. And dogs sometimes goes on the wooded part next to the street (country road, no sidewalks), ours too, and it's just left there. But then again, there are regularly even bigger piles of horse shit on our street too, so a tiny little pile of dog poop isn't a big deal in comparison.

A dog owner can't control where the dog poops. When it needs to poop, it poops. I have a dog and she poops in yards on walks. I always clean it up and I never let her wander far into the yard so she's not in the middle of their yard pooping. I don't mind if a dog poops in our yard as long as the person walking it picks it up. It's a part of life and not a big deal. Birds and animals poop in your yard all the time.

Our dog won’t poop in our yard unless she is sick or has had rawhide. We’ve had her for six years and she just likes to be walked. We always pick up after her and don’t let her roam too far into people’s yards.

There are a few people in the neighborhood who have demanded that we keep our dog out of their yard and it just gave me a negative view of them. There is someone who lets their dog poop without cleaning up and they assumed it was us, so they were fairly rude about it.

I think its terrible for dogs to poop on someone else's lawn. Some poop isn't solid poop that picks up in one piece. Some are nasty and can't be picked up entirely. And then kids go out and play on it? So gross. And I love love love dogs.

@bhbee: Totally agree about people putting their "crap" in your trash can. I actually don't like anyone putting anything in my trash can. My trash cans have to come into my garage. If someone throws away their half full starbucks cup in my trash can, then I get ants. Its terrible! I would die if someone threw away poop in my trash can.

@pinkb: Agree. Not something I would waste my energy getting upset about. There are plenty of other things to be upset and worried about. I do have a dog and he has pooped in neighbors’ yards (right by the side walk) on a walk and I have cleaned it up immediately. I mean, it isn’t like I told him to poop in their yard.

@MrsKRB: I have to agree. If an owner doesn't clean it up then yes it's an issue a big issue. But other than that I think it's kind of a ridiculous thing to get upset about. And if it upsets someone that much you should be an adult and let the pet owner know. Pretty sure they would be repectful of you wishes.

@MrsKRB: maybe my view is skewed but we had someone letting their dog pee over and over in our yard (not likely wild bc of the neighborhood we live in not having much even not squirrels running around near us and the fact that the spots were right near the sidewalk) right after we paid thousands of dollars to put new sod after we bought the house and all the grass was weeds and dead. I was annoyed!

ETA they did usually clean up the poop though. Usually. Or the dog rarely pooped there.

I have no problem with it as long as they clean it up. I think the little signs people stick in their yards are dumb, and they generally given me a negative opinion of those homeowners.

I have a dog, and we live in a townhouse community. We have a backyard, but it is tiny. Our dog will not poop in our backyard because it is so small. I try my best to get my dog to go in one of the common areas or in the area of grass between the sidewalk and the road, but sometimes I can’t help where she goes. I always pick up after her.

I used to live in a townhome and our neighbors dog roamed outside (on a long leash) by itself to do its business. He would always cross over into our yard and go. I was eating breakfast and happened to be looking out my window when I saw it happen. The neighbors had no idea. There’s like a small wall between the townhomes and for some reason the dog would always turn the corner and do his business in yard or on the wall. It drove me crazy. I asked them to pick it up bc they never even knew it was back there. The wall always smelled like pee so I asked them to wash it too.

I think if it’s a one time thing, let it go. If it’s something occurring like mine was, I would say something.

We live in a city without yards now but growing up we lived in a house w a yard right next to a park and yeah, of course dogs pooped there sometimes. I don’t think it’s a big deal as long as it’s picked up. If it bothers you, get a fence. But your grass is never going to be pristine if there’s other things pooping too like squirrels, raccoons, deer, possums, etc. we have dogs now and I always try to get them to pee/poo as close to the curb as possible (again, no yards here!) but it doesn’t always happen, especially if they go more than once during our walk

I don't like it and I think it's kind of rude. Dog pee can kill the grass, and my kids like rolling in the grass bc we have a slight incline in the front of the house.

It's not something I'd actually confront someone over if they cleaned it up but I just don't like it and would try to avoid it if I had a dog!

@LCTBQE: Luckily, I haven't had any energy for gardening since getting pregnant (and the flower beds are a hot mess.) I'm thinking about getting a gardener for the rest of pregnancy. Damn cats.

As a dog owner you can’t really control it when the animal has the urge. Cleaning off poo from grass is easier than a poo bath on concrete. As long as it’s cleaned up NBD IMO.

Yeah, it's cool. Not cool: in flowers or a garden that's being maintained, or male dogs marking on your non-tree items. But grass that's on the edge of the sidewalk when a dog is on leash and then you clean it up well, I have no problem.

Depends. I mean, if your dog is going to go right-this-second, there isn't much you can do. If you drag them, you end up making a trail and that isn't any better. If you know your dog is going to go and you basically roll of the red carpet for them to go, that's different. As long as they clean it up is what matters. I mean, it's outside and exposed, so not much you can do besides putting up a fence. Now, if only I could get the neighborhood cats to stop pooping in my flower beds.
