@Dandelion: Same. No time out. Wait until she calmed down and then directed (not ask this time) to help you pick up the Cheerios.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Omg DD woke at 6:20 and I wasn't ready to be up yet so I locked us both in the office and napped a bit on the futon while she played with her toys.
I woke up and found she had colored all over my white Macbook. The screen, keyboard, the exterior!! I only buy washable crayons too. Kill me!

First thing in the AM my DD can be sensitive so I probably would have let it go. Maybe I would have walked away until she stopped crying then would have made her help me pick the cheerios up. She's usually good about doing what I ask after she calms down.

I would have let it go, but also been consistent with reading the book.

Hmmmm, I don't usually give time outs for tantrums. in cases like this I would help DD calm down, ask her to use her words to describe her feelings, and then once she was calm we could clean up the Cheerios together. Most of the time if we make a game out of it (see who can pick up the most Cheerios the fastest or see if we can count all the Cheerios as we put them in the bowl) she's less likely to be defiant. I know it's so hard walking the line between being consistent and understanding, though!

I would have let that one fly, since she just woke up. Chloe's the same way.. It takes her a little while to fully wake up.

To make you feel better: in the time it took me to pee this morning, she found a crayon under the couch and colored all over the tv stand, floors, and my white curtains. Thank god it's a washable crayon. She's grounded for life & I threw all the crayons away.

I'm a sucker so ill probably buy new crayons next week. And there's probably more lurking under my couch. Wahh!

In that situation I would say "it looks like you aren't ready to be awake" put him back to bed in his room and tell him "when you are awake and able to get ready for x you may come back and join us"

Yes it is a time out. But usually my kid doesn't get enough sleep and is a PITA in the morning.

That's a toughie... I lean towards being consistent so giving the TO... but Wagon Jr. is REALLY sensitive when he first wakes up so my inclination would probably be to let it go and try again after he's a little more awake.

This morning, DD (almost 2) got out of bed, gave me a hug, and proceeded to sit on the carpet as I had brought her a small bowl of dry Cheerios. She didn't want it so I put it on her table and she grabbed her sippy cup. In the process, she knocked over the bowl and Cheerios went flying, which is no big deal, it was an accident. When I asked her to help me clean it up, she said no. I asked her again and she defiantly said no one more time. I told her that she had to help me pick it up together before we could read her book and then she started sobbing. SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH.

I wanted to give her a time out (as I always do for disobedience) but DH felt badly that it was first thing in the morning.

IF you give your toddler time outs, what would you have done?
