I can't recommend a storage ottoman enough, especially with a toddler. All of the toys go in there! Costco had them a while ago- very reasonably priced, and free delivery.

Yeah i think we're going to go with storage ottomans or an oval because we have nowhere to move it, even in our new/bigger place.

Ours is rectangular with sharp corners. We made the area near the table off limits for playing (which he mostly obeyed) or we would put padding around it if he needed to be near it. So far we haven't had any incidents.

We moved our glass, square coffee table to the garage once LO was mobile. We tried to use all types of corner bumpers for the fireplace, side tables, entertainment console and she just rips them right off. So yeah. No coffee table in her main play area.

We haven't gotten around to replacing our coffee table with a storage ottoman yet. When LO started pulling up we just moved the coffee table to the garage. We bring it back in for company. We can't put anything on it anyway since LO will snatch it so no big loss.

@hotchildinthecity: Honestly, my LO hit himself more in the early days on the lower edge; the corners never caught him too badly. There's always something they will hurt themselves on; but we love not having one now!

Thanks all! We have actually thought about getting a couple ottomans with the tops that flip into table tops so that might work too! I will also start looking for an oval or round table. I'd rather not use bumpers.

There is no right answer - every kid is different. If I were you, I'd absolutely skip a square/pointy one if you can. We had one with rounded corners (square) and LO was continually running into it, pulling up on it, lots of bleeding injuries. It simply wasn't worth it. We got rid of it and bought two soft poufs and a sofa table that works so much better for our lives, around when he was 11 months and just started pulling up. If we still had it, it's safe to say he would be leaping off of it like he does the poufs. SO glad we got rid of it.

We had a rectangular one and DS would rip off the foam corners. He then wiped out pretty good on the corner of it and had a nice triangle shaped bruise on his cheek. We also had a oval shaped one...DS and my nephew hit their heads on that multiple times too...so no table is 100%. We now have no coffee table haha

We didn't want to get bumpers on our coffee table, and it was near the end of its life, so we went with a long leather ottoman instead, which we use with trays when we want to have a table surface. It's been great - it makes the living room feel much more secure with a toddler.

i would definitely get bumpers. charlie hit his head on the corner of our friend's coffee table, and then their son hit it really hard and needed stitches. coffee table injuries are one of the top injuries.

doesn't mean that you need to avoid square tables... just get the bumpers.

Our coffee table is from when I was a kid, and is wood and rectangular. LO learned quickly to watch her head, and it has not been a problem at all. If it's an issue, you can pad the corners until your LO is older.

If I were looking for something new at the toddler stage, I would buy something I liked that I wouldn't have to baby/toddler proof: ie, no sharp edges, no glass, etc. I would be annoyed that I had to put foam around it or constantly be worried about LO cutting their head open. I would rather get something I like without all that.

My toddler is a rough and tumble climber so speaking from that perspective. We have an old army trunk as our coffee table.

I think it depends on the child; some are more cautious than others and so less likely to run into an edge of a table. There are also bumpers and corner guards you can order online for square tables.

We have a rectangular coffee table and (knock on wood) have never had an issue. LO is very cautious though; so she isn't climbing and jumping and running through the living room.
