@Bluebonnet: Awesome, this is helpful. Our sitter is really in over her head so you could be right. Although she is the most soft-spoken, non-emotive person I have ever met in my life so even if she's freaking out, LO probably wouldn't pick up on it :) I'm feeling more encouraged she hasn't had an accident since pee-hour yesterday so we'll see!

@JoJoGirl: We did OCPT about a year ago. I noticed that LO responded better to my Mom than my Dad. My Mom was great about properly prompting (lets put on our shoes, sit on the potty, then go to the park). My Dad would freak out the second LO was showing her tells and LO would flat out refuse to go to the potty for him (and things would escelate into a power struggle if DH, my Mom, or I didn't quickly intervene).

I think that how your sitter is acting could be impacting how LO is responding. If your sitter is really stressed out about the whole thing, then LO could be picking up on it. The book talks about getting to a point where you do not care if LO pees on themself or the floor. If your sitter seems extra focused on the potty or doesn't react well when LO has an accident, then LO could be reacting to that. Hang in there this week and coach the sitter as much as possible on how to effectively prompt LO and what to do if there is an accident. Then refocus this weekend/next week. Hang in there!

Yeah, basically we remind her where the toilet is - if she hasn't been in a while we'll say 'let's go pee' and if she says no, we back off.

The rest of the day was fine yesterday - pooped in the potty a 3rd time and no more pee accidents, even playing outside for almost an hour. Hoping today will be smooth too.

@Kemma: same for us! Reminding E too often totally pissed her off more and made her refuse to sit for us. I guess toddlers don't like to be nagged ;)

@blackbird: interestingly enough, I read somewhere that over-prompting / reminding is major factor in toilet refusal / regression. Life got much easier for us when we backed off on the reminding and just let Miss A do her thing (although I do still remind her before we leave the house, before dinner etc), and she now takes herself off to the toilet on a pretty reliable basis.

@HabesBabe: well, a lot of the first and second blocks involves some prompting, whether you point out the toilet and let it be, or you take them to the toilet and have them sit and attempt to go, particularly after sitting for a long time or the other easy catches. She was against over prompting, which is often met with resistance. The whole "come, it's time to pee" thing, etc

@blackbird: When we read it, I thought that she said to not prompt, and that it's more of an impact (not sure if that's the right word) if they have accidents. I do remember that phase one can last awhile, but the "set the timer for 30 mins" wasn't one of the approaches.

@JoJoGirl: Re: 4x in 30 minutes, my LO has multiple accidents in a short period until we can get her to calm down, sit on the potty, and actually mindfully go. It's like she just lets out a little bit with each accident.

@JoJoGirl: I thought with Oh Crap, Potty Training-- you don't prompt and set a timer? Stage 1 or whatever is bottomless, and they need to tell you when they need to go. That's what worked for us when we started to potty train.

I agree with @Kemma:
How old is your lo? It sounds like she's using the bathroom more when given the opportunity but not necessarily recognizing when she has to go and then going? Also will daycare help if you just hold off a month or aren't done yet? It could help with a little consistency rather than different sitters and vacation.
I know it's frustrating but it will happen!

@Kemma: We just trained her a week ago, so she's still in the phase of learning, not in the already-established phase, if that makes sense. She went about 90 mins yesterday without an accident (peed before playground, played, peed after playground) so the time is getting extended but we really just started.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but if you're having to remind LO to go to the toilet every thirty minutes then the notion of going to the toilet probably isn't that well established (says the lady who's daughter is finally getting it after nine months!).

In my experience, having good days and bad days are pretty normal until they've really got the hang of it and can recognise their own cues without being reminded.

@JoJoGirl: I know! That's why I'm just nervous about starting this in general. As for the sitter - she didn't put a diaper on for nap, so maybe she's forgetting to put her on the potty every half hour and your LO isn't recognizing that she has to tell her that she has to go? I'm so sorry...so frustrating.

So update - I just talked to the sitter since LO is napping. She apparently peed *4* times in the course of an hour (3 of which were accidents) which is really strange. Then she pooped in the potty for the second time today (!) so maybe all is not lost. Sigh.

Hoping you're able to get back on track tomorrow! I'm afraid of this when we potty train. My FIL won't change a diaper, so when he watches LO, I have to be the one to come down from WFH and change his diaper. So if I want him to go on the potty every 30 minutes, I have to be the one to go downstairs and take him, and that doesn't always work well with working from home.

Maybe your LO feels as though she doesn't have to "please" the sitter with potty success. Perhaps a diff type of reward system just for the sitter? If she's going to be with this sitter for the rest of August, I'd want to try and save as much of the PT'ing success now or you may just have to re-train her when daycare starts up again. But, I think kids tend to do better with it at daycare if they see other kids going. Peer pressure!

I think if she is newly trained and the babysitter is not on top of it, it's totally possible to regress :(

Post bootcamp, have you been maintaining the PT'ing in a particular way that you could convey to the sitter? Remind LO to tell you when she needs to go constantly, or go at intervals? Rewards? I would try to get the sitter more involved in whatever capacity she can..

We did the OCPT weekend bootcamp last weekend and LO has done great since then. She didn't have any accidents at all this past weekend (no poop on Saturday, two in the potty on Sunday, all pees in the potty). We were feeling really encouraged.

Our daycare is closed in August and unfortunate timing meant LO is home with a relatively inexperienced babysitter this whole week. She did great this morning then peed her pants on the way home from the playground, was upset, and changed. The babysitter said she has peed in her pants twice more since then and "didn't seem to notice". UGH.

Is it possible for her to just completely regress in one day because of a maybe not-attentive-enough caregiver?!

ETA: I already reminded the sitter she needs to SET A TIMER and prompt every 30 mins but I'm worried LO has just lost it.
