No, there is absolutely nothing you can do. It is all to do with hormones and your placenta. Of course eating healthy doesn't hurt, but it won't decrease your chances of getting a GD diagnosis.

I don't think there's anything you can do to prevent having gestational diabetes, but I can tell you that walking helped me a ton.

With my first, I took the 1-hour and sat in the waiting room for an hour. My result was a 205. They didn't even allow me to take the 3-hour. I monitored with diet and exercise.

With my second, I took the 1-hour and paced the waiting room. It was an outpatient center, so it was a little bigger, but people seriously thought I was nuts! I failed, but my number was only 145 this time. So on to the 3-hour I went. I did the same thing and walked after each blood draw. I passed the initial, 2-hour, and 3-hour blood draws, but failed the 1-hour. They would have diagnosed me with GD had I failed 2 out of the 4.

My sister had gestational diabetes during both of her pregnancies (about 5 years apart). She was able to control it well with diet modifications both times, but also needed some insulin. As far as I know nothing has been mentioned about her possibly developing diabetes now that she is no longer pregnant. It's been about 5 months since she gave birth to her second child and so far so good.

It seems that diet modifications could possibly prevent this, so I don't think it hurts to try to eat healthier to help with this. My sister didn't really keep up with her super healthy eating after having her first child, so I think she was expecting to have gestational diabetes again the second time.

Good luck!

I had/have insulin resistant PCOS and I was on metformin before I started my IVF cycle. I was supposed to continue taking it into my pregnancy but HG prevented me from swallowing pills. Metformin is given to diabetics. I was really worried that I had and would get gestational diabetes. I am at a higher risk of developing diabetes in general because I have insulin resistant PCOS.

I never got gestational diabetes.

I have heard from doctors that eating healthy is the best way to prevent it.

I think since there are no symptoms that there isn't much you can do.

@Cole: my midwives specifically recommended walking and cinnamon as well! And almonds are good at regulating blood sugar as well.

The two things I tried were exercise- I walked a ton in general and made sure I took a walk that morning, and cinnamon, which I think I are that morning? Maybe the night before? Both are supposed to aid your body in insulin regulation. Neither were outside the realm of normal behavior for me but since they both help I tried to be extra mindful of them. I apparently passed with flying colors but I don't remember my numbers.

I had high risk factors as an African-American and family history. My midwife recommended I watch my weight, and eat well. My midwives told me up to half of gestational diabetes patients will develop type 2 diabetes afterwards, and that your risks increase by 20% from gestational diabetes alone. A lot of times you were already predisposed to it.

There are risk factors for getting GD, but the only one you can do anything about is your weight, and I think you have to be significantly overweight for it to contribute as a risk factor.

I'm definitely concerned about developing type II after pregnancies, and both my endocrinologist and OB share this concern. I switched practices to an endocrinologist who is stricter about things b/c I want to be really proactive and delay/prevent as much as possible.

I passed with flying colors with DS1 and failed miserably with DS2.
I was told there was nothing to do that would prevent it. I'm a very healthy, clean eater, including while pregnant, so even a no sugar diet didn't help me. And my weight is well within the healthy range.
After DS2 was born my levels were back to normal and I don't have diabetes.
Honestly, having it while pregnant helped me to keep my weight gain in check.

I've had it both times. I tested early for it this time and failed the 1-hour. I did not have diabetes after my first and we'll see after I deliver this one, but it's rare to have it after.

Don't try to cheat the test. It's better for you and baby if you follow the diet throughout (if you have it).

You don't want to try and cheat the test. If you eat healthier now and pass- keep eating the same all the way through. That said, I think you are or you are not regardless of diet (within reason). I had GD- having it after you give birth is rare.

I think having a healthy low sugar diet may help. Based on your post it seems you have been borderline diabetic. When any person is borderline diabetic, the first recomendation is to watch their diet. Meaning avoiding or limiting high sugar and starch. Your pregnant so you probably need some sugar and starch in your diet . I would talk to your OB and primary care about a low sugar diet during pregnancy and see what they say.

My OB says eating better now can't hurt either (I'm 10 weeks). I failed with flying colors the first time around; but I suspect I've always been borderline diabetic.

Not sure if you can truly do anything to prevent it. I didnt have it, but I was high risk for it and was tested twice. A carb heavy diet makes the body work harder to process, eating healthier now can't hurt.

I don't think there's really anything you can do to prevent it? It's something about hormones from the placenta blocking the action of the mother's insulin.

With my first my 1hr was 183. They almost didn't let me take the 3hr, but I ended up passing (barely). With my second I passed the 1hr with no problems.

And getting GD doesn't mean you'll get normal diabetes afterwards!

I'm 23 weeks today, which means I'll be having my delightful glucose test in about five weeks. I was flagged with my firstborn. I tested at 138, and the office's cutoff was 140, so I did the three-hour challenge. I passed the immediate and one-hour test, then (barely) failed the two-hour and three-hour. They didn't diagnose me with GD, but just the same, I'm worrying about this pregnancy!

1. Is there anything I can eat now that could help guard against it in a month and a half?

2. Because I was borderline with my first, does this mean the same thing for my second?

Selfishly, I think I'm most worried that GD during pregnancy will mean I'll have diabetes AFTER pregnancy, which completely alarms me.

Thanks for any insights!
