@permastudent: thanks for the advice. I'll stretch now. This is one of the more embarrassing injuries I've experienced.

You could have strained a muscle! Glute max is a big muscle and I think it would be fairly tough to strain, but there is little piriformis that is deeper in which gives people all sorts of problems! A sprain would be non-muscular, so ligament tears and that sort of thing. Either way, not fun! Try to take it easy, use heat or ice (whichever makes it feel better), and some gentle stretching as the pain goes down.

@mrs.pen: good point to distinguish between muscle and bone. I guess it's more like a pulled muscle. There wasn't an injury, I just felt a pain when I got out of the car.

Was there an injury? And technically yes, you could sprain it- you have spinal bones that curve inward at your butt, and of course 3 hip bones.
And there are multiple muscles- but in my experience bone and muscle injuries feel quite differently! If you sprained a spine or hip bone you likely wouldn't be able to walk.

I'd consider checking out a chiropractor!

Another post title I never imagined I'd write. Today when I got out of the car I felt like I pulled a muscle in my left buttock. Sorry for the TMI. It's sore and feels uncomfortable when I walk. There are gluteal muscles, right? What do you do if you pull one? I don't want to go to the doctor and explain that I may have sprained my butt.
