@Sammyfab: She's mainly doing 3 naps a day still, but 2 weeks ago had a week of awesome naps (which I am not attributing to the week of rain we had since she has not slept that well since). I am going to try to keep her awake a little longer today to see if I can catch her window. I do believe it is a timing issue as well.

She still is crying through her naps, but will have moments of silence and then cries near the end. I hope that's a sign of her learning.

Your nap routine sounds perfect!

I definitely think your waketimes are on the shorter side. I know for my LO he would fight the nap much harder if I put him down too early. If I put him down late he will conk out but take a short nap and wake up cranky.

Is she on 2 naps or 3? If she's on 3 I would use 2-2.5 hour waketimes and if she's on 2 naps I would use 2.75-3 hour waketimes.

@mamajaja: my guy will be 7 months next week. His wakeful periods are closer to 3 hours. According to what I've read, after 6 months, most babies are on a 3 nap per day schedule, which is consistent with my LO. I have not nap trained, but let him fall into a patter on his own. His morning and night naps are 30-60 minutes and his afternoon nap is 2 -3 hours

My guess is that she's way overtired. For my LO I found that there was no way he would nap if he was overtired. Since the sleep training is going well, I would pause the nap training and get her well rested, then try again.

@zippylef: Her nap routine is pretty simple and an abbreviated version from the nighttime routine - diaper change, sleep sack, song, and then crib. Basically everything - bath and book. What makes a really good nap routine? Will it be confusing to her if i change up the routine now?

@junebugmama: She's 7.5 months.

@Sammyfab: So at 7.5 months, should her wake periods be longer? Pre-nap training, I did try toying with her wake periods and it still seemed like she would go down easier between around the 2 hour mark. Should I just start sticking more to a schedule than at her age?

Do you have a really good nap routine? It helped for us. I would do her nighttime routine - the bath before every nap until she got better at napping.

We had some very rough weeks too. :( My daughter HATES napping.

Aww...hang in there! How old is she again?

Weissbluth's 1-2 hr wake time rule is for younger babies (less than 4-5 months). If she's older then it could definitely be that she isn't tired enough to sleep. Sleepy cues after 4 months become less reliable...she might be acting tired because she's bored or that's when she normally naps (with your help). I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to teach your LO how to fall asleep on her own...that's not a certain way....it's the right way! :)

My child would scream bloody murder if I ever tried to 'train' her to nap a specific way. I think some children take to it more easily than others.

@Sammyfab: I think it's a timing issue too, and the fact that she's already overtired. I've been keeping her awake time between 1.5 to 2 hours. This morning, I put her down about 1 hr and 15 min after she woke up because she started showing some sleepy cues. But since she's crying for each nap she's essentially not getting any sleep so awake the whole time then right? I definitely do not keep her awake times more than 2 hours. She has been showing tired cues for pretty much the rest of the day, which is what makes timing so hard as well. Do I try again right away or wait a little for the next "sleep period" as Weissbluth put it. It's been a balancing game, and I feel like I'm doing it blind. =(

They say nap training can take 1-2 weeks :(.

Can I ask how much awake time your LO has between naps? It might be a timing thing (I.e. she is not tired enough or overtired when you are putting her down).

We are on day 3 of nap training LO, and she has not napped since. She cries the full hour for each nap. We are night training and weaned the swaddle cold turkey at the same time and that seems to be going well, but I think it might also be because she is so exhausted by the end of the day.

I know nap training is supposed to be a lot harder than sleep training, but is it supposed to be THIS bad? I feel so horrible knowing she is so tired. How did you deal with it? I may have to scrap nap training soon, but DH and I are willing to give it a full week of consistency, but I didn't expect for LO to not nap at all. It's really breaking my heart. =(
