No. we started with purees at 4 months and by 6 months we were giving him bits of our food because he was losing interest in the purees. at 10 months, he refuses purees and just wants our food.

@TurtleDoves: It works out great for us! And because I'm really particular about what LO eats, we've been eating a lot healthier as well. Plus, she's been exposed to flavors she wouldn't have otherwise, which I think is awesome. The other night she couldn't get enough bolognese sauce, which I'm pretty sure not too many purée only babies get to taste :)

we do a combo too -- usually something like at every meal he gets a puree plus a few finger foods to try. he's 10 months old and still likes purees but LOVES trying new finger foods :)

breakfast is always milk, baby oatmeal, and prune or pear puree with plain yoghurt though. not enough morning brain cells to prepare blw food!! :)

@TurtleDoves: My baby doesn't have any teeth yet, but loves bananas in the mesh feeder. It's a good way to start food. I think tonight, I'm putting sweet potatoes in it and seeing how it goes.

@TurtleDoves: he does have 2 teeth but honestly he doesn't use them to eat because we only give him foods that are bite size so it doesn't really touch his front teeth. he just uses his gums and tongue to chew. :)

@jmarionsmith: thanks for asking this. My concern with BLW is yours. I wonder how we're supposed to keep track of how much they are getting if it is not in containers, ya know? Also, we are doing purees because we started young (5m) so when he is 7 months-ish, I plan on being done with them and just giving him whatever we have in the house and getting him into table food.
By the way, can I ask if your baby has teeth? I am excited to give my son bananas when the time comes (my favorite fruit, ever) but I'm assuming they need a tooth or two?

@Running Elley: same!

@Weagle: so you do BLW only at dinner and snack? I'd like to do something like this because I actually enjoy feeding LO :) But then again I want him to eat toher foods and use his hands as well.

@regberadaisy: thanks so much! he inhales puffs and bananas so i think he's ready to graduate! :)

@weagle: that's a great idea! we'll probably do lunch as his "table food meal" as it's the time of day i have the most energy and patience. :) and like your LO, ours pretty much eats any and everything we put in his mouth. he even loves the oral vaccines!

@adren: we are going to try avocado today! i have a MAJOR fear of choking and starting new foods terrifies me but hopefully, slowly, we will be able to get to where he just eats what we do! thank you!

I would start with soft foods like avocados and ripe bananas, and see how he reacts. They'll just slip right down. If he handles those well then I think it'd be fine to start feeding him whatever you are eating.

Or you could start with give him something large to gnaw on, to get the hang of the whole "chewing" thing. :)

Nope! LO is 10 months and is still getting a mixture of purees and table food. Maybe you could start by making one meal your "table food" meal. Whichever one is easiest for you. Our snack and dinner are always table food, breakfast is always oatmeal, and lunch depends on our mood :)

ETA: As far as amounts go with BLW, we let LO eat until she's done or starts throwing food on the floor. She mostly just inhales what we put in front of her... There's no doubt she's eating enough :)

I was just wondering how to do purees and then transition to BLW! Good question. Subscribing :)

Nope it's not too late! It's not a all or nothing. I started purées at just shy of 6 months then at 6.5 moved to chunkier purées and puffs etc. at 7.5 she was a solids eating pro.
Don't worry so much about how much she is getting. It's all for fun and practice anyway.

Ok this is probably a dumb question but here goes. LO is 6 months old and has been eating purees since he was 4 months. I'd really like to start him on table foods (we have done puffs and bananas, which he devours) but I don't know if I should do a combo of purees and table foods or just cut out the purees all together.

I guess I'm worried a) that he is not ready to go to "normal" food so quickly and b) how do I know that he's getting enough table food equivalent to the amount of purees he's used to eating.

I feel really ignorant on the subject and I have tried researching but I figure I'd go to the experts, my fellow bees. :)
