There were some studies that stuff like DDT could be stored in the body fat for years and then released into the bloodstream when people lost weight. Most pregnant women while they're gaining weight are pretty cautious about exposing themselves to chemicals so it's not something I'd worry too much about.

@Rubies: I didn't lose weight because I was afraid of my supply being affected, but I got really sick of carrying around the extra 20 so I started doing Jillian's 30 day shred. It's SO easy and it helped me shed weight!
Each work out is only 20 mins too.. !

On weight watchers they add extra points for breastfeeding moms, but they're still able to join!

I am not a doctor. This is what I have heard myself. The thought of not to lose weight comes from the process of ketosis. This is why Atkins works. Essentially by not eating carbs, your body must access the energy in your cells. To do this it has to break those cells down and that process releases ketones. This is the protein in your urine that they always looked for while pregnant in case of pre-eclampsia.

For a long time it was thought that ketosis was a very bad thing. Now, it isn't as clear cut (much like everything else these days). But, I believe you can safely lose weight while breastfeeding without going into a ketosis situation if you are mindful.

My understanding is you need extra calories for an adequate milk supply...

@Rubies: My NP told me not to actively try to lose weight because the calcium loss can cause long term problems down the road that you won't notice now.
I'm 7w pp, don't know when I can actively lose weight

I was recently told that weight loss while breastfeeding is bad because losing weight releases toxins in your milk.

Have you heard of this?? I was advised not to try actively losing weight until I had completely weaned.

This wasn't from a doctor, just a friend. But was just wondering if there is real truth behind this?
