For nursing school, our deadline was October 1, so they wanted us to get them pretty much as soon as they were available! (And before we start out clinical rotations). My son had his on October 5. Honestly since it takes a couple of weeks to take full effect, I didn't want to wait any longer. I'll be working in different hospitals, I teach in a college, and my son just started preschool- we're not taking any chances!

Our ped prefers not to give them in August. He says they are effective for about six months and he wants to make sure they are still protected in the spring. I got mine early Sept. the kids got theirs this week.

I have not heard this but did wonder about it. Last year LO1 got his shot in September and the rest of us got them in November. Guess who was the only one who got the flu (in March).

My OB just told me to get it this month (rather than last month when I saw her) because the flu season "went late" last year - into April - which is when I'm due and she would hate for me to catch it at 39 weeks pregnant. So I plan to go in the next few weeks and get it. I need to take DS soon too, but they didn't have it yet at his last appointment (in August).

just got DS's. Asked his ped about this for me/DH/grandparents... She said some years, the vaccine isn't that great and could wear off, but this year it's good, so get it ASAP.

I work in public health and I can assure you this is not true  It's best to get it as soon as it is available - ideally before October - since it actually takes 2 weeks to fully protect. That said - it's never too late!

Nope. I got into this with my kid's pediatrician mentioning that I saw an NPR article saying to wait as well as my internist said to wait. He said to not wait at all and get it. I just got it today because of schedules. Half of my family is vaccinated. I have to get the baby vaccinated and husband can do it, if he chooses to.

My pediatrician says it is never too early and that is a myth. I am taking my 2 and 4 year old today and my other son will be 6 months next month and I will get it at his wellness visit.

I work in a hospital and we already have a patient with a confirmed case of the flu.

I heard somewhere that getting the flu vaccine later in the season is a better option because otherwise it "wears off". Have you ever heard of this and whether it's true? When do your children usually get their flu vaccine?

Obviously this is a question for those who do choose to vaccinate their children. :)
