In Italy, where my parents are from, the maiden name becomes the middle name after marriage. I like it because it is the only thing that is even remotely ethnic about me. </p> <p>That being said, we chose not to do that with our son, we picked a family name for his middle name. Later I learned that by having the same middle name, it grouped and identified us as being part of the same family.</p> <p>I plan on giving the same middle name to my children. I don't find middle names particularly useful other than an extra initial.</p> <p>ETA: I think it actually awesome with girls, because if they chose to take their future husbands last name they still have that extra link.
