Once at 4 months and once at 9 months and both times were pretty rough. We will be flying again next month (she'll be 15 months old) and we bought her a seat. One, we will need a carseat when we get there and two I figure the worst that happens is she won't sit in her seat and only with us-but at least there's an option for her to sit in her seat. Both times before I would have given anything to have a place to put her! That said, if you're going with your inlaws that's more laps and I hear some babies sleep peacefully on airplanes (this has not been our experience). Also, worse case scenario it's only 2.5 hours! I am studying to become a car seat tech, and the safest answer is that all children should be in their own seat with proper restraint systems. The issue isn't a plane crash (as we all know that's likely catastrophic), but more a runway accident, turbulence, or other rapid movement. Literally, everything in the plane is secured down, except for little kids on laps. They can be thrown up into the ceiling or several rows away. :( BUT, we are flying in 3 weeks, and did not buy our 10 month old a seat. My husband really didn't want to spend the extra money ($600), and he said we can just hope the flight isn't sold out, and we can bring her seat on. It sucks, but it is what it is. So yeah, the safest way is kid in own seat, with proper restraint, but you've gotta do what works best for you. FWIW, I think our 10 month old will do just fine. She loves being close to us, and they are easy enough to distract with toys/paper/people at that age. In retrospect, at THAT age I wish he had had his own seat for most of the flights (just so we'd have a little bit more room for him to move around, but at 9m I definitely would have taken him as a lap baby. A seat of her own, she doesn't love being held for long periods of time and the last time I flew with her (she was 11 months) on a 2 hr flight, she wriggled and pushed the seat in front of us with her feet and was difficult in general. Once at 15 and once at 18 months. she did great on the 2 and 2.5 he flights. However, that said, it is safest to have your child in his or her own seat. If you can pick your seat, and the rows have 3 seats in each, choose aisle and window. If the plane is crowded, someone will switch w you so you and dh are together but if it isn't crowded the middle seat might not get taken and you can get a whole row wo paying for itt! She slept most of the time. We brought the tablet, and she was pretty content to sit on our laps and watch it when she was awake. It really wasn't bad at all.
