I had Mirena put in at 6 weeks PP, and I plan to have it taken out when LO is a year old so we can get ready for #2. I think it's totally worth it. I didn't have to pay anyting for mine either.

if it was covered by insurance i say go for it. Mine wasn't and cost over $1000, so when i got it, i was looking long term (and kept it about 4 years so I think it was worth it). I had paragard and got pregnant the first cycle we tried, which was about 6 weeks after iud removal (dr. recommended waiting 1 cycle and we weren't ready quite yet anyway).

Everyone is different, but as far as getting pregnant "right away" after Mirena... Mine was taken out early in Aug and I got pregnant in mid October. I had withdrawal bleeding and one full cycle before getting a BFP.

I only had the Mirena in for about 10 months in between #1's birth and trying for #2. I think it was totally worth it! Also we got pregnant our first month trying after the removal. The doctor advised that we wait one cycle after the removal so they'd have a more accurate due date, my period returned less than a month later, and then we got pregnant again immediately!

I had the Mirena placed 18 months after DS was born. I was done with the pill and condoms, but we have at least 9-12 months before we try for #2. (Or until DH gets a job). I barely felt it being inserted. If your insurance will cover it, I say go for it.

8 months is a long time to use another form of birth control that you don't like. My IUD insertion and experience was hell, but that was before I had a baby. Most people have a pretty easy time getting it in then.

I'm 7 months post-partum, and realizing that i don't want to go the condom route until we try for #2. We will probably start trying for #2 next summer, so i'd have at least 8 months of IUD usage before removing it.

I've already purchased the IUD (Mirena) and it was covered by insurance. Are there any risks i should worry about? Should i hold off on IUD insertion until i have #2? Will i get my period right after removing the IUD and start trying right away?
