I would say it's about half hand me down and half new clothes. My boys were born in different seasons and my huge collection of short sleeve onesies isn't cutting it for DS2. Luckily I have a few gender neutral hand me downs from my nieces.

If we try for another, I'm hoping for another girl. She'll be mostly in hand me downs and I'd happy to be able to get real use out of it all!

Most of LO #1's wardrobe is hand me downs. We have a friend with a LO born 15 months prior to ours and since LO is a monster (seriously -at 6 weeks she has outgrown most of her 0-3 clothes) and it's warm here most of the time, the clothes mostly work. I love it because our friend had some really cute clothes!

@shopaholic: Very good point! I'm still pretty anal about keeping my daughter out of the paint at preschool, am around to help her eat her meals, etc., - touch wood, I don't think we've ruined ANYTHING yet - but once the baby is here and my elder daughter does more independently/with her nanny and just is generally into more....I can see how more wear and tear is going to happen.

This is already somewhat true of her 3-6 month size clothing - she started wearing it big last fall/winter, and is still fitting into the last bits (sweaters that ran large) now...so pjs/onesies are have been washed a bunch, and even if it has held up decently, I'm tired enough of seeing it that I might try to sell to or swap with some other mama friends just for a bit of wardrobe refreshment!

I'd say about 99% of my youngest's clothes are from his older brother since their birth months are only a month apart. And he has some really nice designer clothes thanks to gma! It's SO nice...but at the same time girl clothes would have been fun to shop for.

@PinkElephant: I feel like up to your daughter's age, a lot of the hand-me-downs will still be in great condition. But I think as kids get older, they tend to get worn out and worn longer. So I figured by then, you'd (figuratively) need to buy #2 LO a decent amount of new clothes? I've noticed it in the few hand-me-downs we've gotten. I have no problem with most of the stuff 1 y/o and under, but after 2, the clothes look really worn and unappealing. Just IMHO.

Ok, I'm glad to hear the consensus that most of you are reusing as much as you can! I suppose with two girls there's only so long before they'll develop their own fashion tastes and be demanding things that are more "their style" anyway! :) I was just feeling a bit guilty that LO #2 might be getting shorted a bit in having things that are "her own", but there is plenty of time for that later when she actually cares!

I'm like @Mae: I only have 1 right now, but a majority of DS's wardrobe is hand me downs. I'm so thankful for them and they're all totally something I'd purchase on my own! Her son was born 1 year prior to DS so everything is season/size appropriate. Love it! I hope to be able to reuse a lot of it with LO #2 in the future, even if #2 is a girl!

I'm just having my first LO and her clothes will still be more hand-me-downs than new! I have a friend who had a little girl last May, and I'm due this May, so everything is perfect for season/age. She already gave me a huge rubber made tote of clothes 0-6 mo and said more are coming as her daughter grows. The clothes are so cute I don't see any reason not to use those primarily. I'm sure I'll buy a few things if i see something super cute. But why spend money on things I don't need when there are so many other things to spend it on!

Mostly but I like shopping! They were born in opposite seasons so I bought cute summery rompers and dresses and lots of warmer outfits/PJs.

We don't know the sex of LO#2 (and don't plan to find out until birth) but I don't plan on buying anything if it's a boy and very little if it's a girl. I only buy second hand and use hand me downs so with the exception of a few gifts, LO#1s whole wardrobe was used so I don't feel bad about using second hand stuff for LO#2.

E has a lot of adorable clothes, however our next child will *hopefully* be a spring baby so if it is another girl we will be running into opposite seasons. So we will just have to see how it all falls, but I have been saving all her clothes in case.

@PinkElephant: I think it's fun to buy second LO's their own clothes too, even if the ones you have work out fine.

Thanks! We don't have much of a seasonal issue because it's warm 10 out of 12 months here. Good for the wallet, bad for my inner fashion maven! :)

A has a ton of clothes, but once Summer hits (baby #2 born will be born in March), she won't be able to wear her big sister's clothes because Baby will be in 3/6 months through the summer and A was in 9/12 months during the summer. Some things like white onesies/socks and some lighter colored shirts (staining), won't be able to be used again...maybe just for play clothes. We buy second hand or huge sales anyway so it won't break the bank to buy more clothes.

If you have two same-sex children close in age, how much of the younger child's wardrobe is hand me downs? What did you buy (or receive) new? Special outfits (like coming home, holiday, etc.)? A certain size? Any one particular item (onesies, pants, etc.)?

My daughter (who will be about 22 months old when her little sister is born) has an amazing wardrobe, so I'm excited to have the chance to reuse some favorite items when LO #2 is born this spring. She had so many clothes that pretty much nothing was worn out, and I saved almost everything. Right now my plan is to re use as much as possible, but I may weed out things I don't *LOVE* and sell them to make room for a few new pieces, since it's always hard to resist buying cute clothes, and I'm sure my younger daughter will continue to receive gifts of clothing.
