@creativemomma15: you just need to be diligent about reading the ingredient labels. I didn't have this whole thing memorized but I knew the basic ones like casein and whey.
http://www.kellymom.com/store/freehandouts/hidden-dairy01.pdf

I ate a lot of Asian food since there typically is no dairy.

@hilsy85: She's not really drooling or congested. The whole last week I would say her stools were always mildly stringy. Last night and today I am seeing more globs of mucous. She's still not overly fussy or cranky though.

@Ms maths: I love dairy too so this is hard for me! If it was occasional diapers I wouldn't be as concerned but this is every time she poops..

@mrsjyw: Thanks! I am glad it wasn't anything serious for your LO.

@Silva: I actually had an appt with a lactation consultant yesterday and we talked about the foremilk/hindmilk thing too. I've been trying to do more block feeding with her since then, but she isn't often content with only one side. But she is definitely getting a second letdown on the first side now. My DH is more on the "chill out" side of things. You wouldn't think I would worry about it so much considering this is my 3rd time at this! :silly: It just bugs me!

@NovBaby1112: Yea, I would say the mucous has gotten worse in the last day. There were tiny specks of green one time last night but that's it. Her disposition is still fine though for a 4 week old! I am worried it's going to get worse and it is the consistency of it that has me more concerned. I feel like it has to mean something!

@JoyfulKiwi: Thank you! I feel like it has to mean something too. What did cutting back on dairy look like for you? My lactation consultant said to stay away from milk, cheese & yogurt. But what about milk baked in things? Or butter? Thanks for the info on how long it could take to make a difference! Part of me is wondering if I should just completely eliminate it and wait the couple of weeks to see if it changes and then add back in the little amounts like milk baked into bread, etc.

@sunny: This is my first time with a baby with mucousy diapers so I feel new at this! DD2 will be 4 weeks old tomorrow. Did you have a hard time eliminating dairy completely from your diet?

For LO1, we started seeing mucousy poops which eventually lead to blood in her diaper. Our ped suggested eliminating dairy which solved things for us.

LO2 is 5 weeks and has mucousy poops/tons of gas as well so I've just eliminated dairy this week.

Good luck!

@creativemomma15: personally I don't think mucus in bms is "normal", but it may not be a serious problem. With my son he had mucus in his stool, then they were always green + mucus and so I cut way back on dairy until 9 months (but didn't eliminate). He still had mucus sometimes but he was fine after that. My daughter has mucus bms now, but they're not always green, so I did the same type of cutting back on dairy. At 8 weeks she had streaks of blood in her stool, so I'm totally eliminating to see if it helps.

It takes 2-ish weeks for dairy proteins to cycle out of your system, plus another 2 or so for it to get out of baby, so it'll take 2-4 weeks of low/no dairy to tell if it's making a difference. But being happy is a good sign for baby!

So for us, mucus in the stools was the very first symptom. Then came the green color, then came the painful gas/poop, and then came the blood. It could end up being just mucus and if it is, I would not do anything as long as LO is happy/gaining/etc. BUT if it is anything like what experienced, it got gradually worse. I started eliminating dairy when I suspected something was off and I am glad I did. Our GI doctor said most of the time if mucus is present for an extended period, it means something is irritating the GI tract. But it could also be a cold or teething, so you could give it some more time and see.

@creativemomma15: My daughter had mucous poops occasionally. She gained weight fine, and wasn't fussy, and never spit up. I did a dairy elimination to see if it would help her sleep better (a long shot) and it did not. So I went back to eating dairy. Her ped basically said "if its not a problem, its not a problem." We both suspected some kind of fore/hindmilk imbalance or something about the way she nursed/my milk let down.
I remember being so worried about it. In hindsight, I wish I could tell myself to chill out.

DS2 had similar "symptoms" I went dairy free for a few weeks just to see if it would get better and we saw an improvement, he also got his first cold at 4 weeks and was congested which I'm sure added to the mucous. He was put on Zantac for excessive spit up too, but pedi wasn't concerned about the mucous and it didn't turn into any sort of serious allergy or intolerance.

Both our kids occasionally had mucous in stool but no other issues, so we just ignored it and it would go away eventually.

I once asked our ped about dairy intolerance--I can't remember what prompted the question but it was something that was occurring but didn't seem to be really problematic--and he said that even if it was dairy intolerance, if it wasn't really causing a problem for LO, then I shouldn't worry about it. Which was very comforting to me, because I like dairy :)

I would not worry. If her disposition is fine and she's gaining weight, I don't see what the issue is? And by mucous do you mean strings in the diaper? or like globs and globs? is she drooling or congested a lot?

@Truth Bombs: @MrsSRS: So I called the Dr and talked to a nurse and they said to bring her in if she ends up with blood in her stools, starts spitting up or gets really fussy. They also suggested I cut back on dairy but not eliminate it. I've done that since Monday and haven't had any dairy except for butter and if it's baked in bread... But her stools have gotten more mucousy in the last 12-18 hours. She has a well check on Thursday but I just wish this was fixed! How quickly would I see her stools improve after cutting back on dairy?

You definitely don't need green for it to be an intolerance. I would make an appointment with your ped and bring a stool sample for them to check out and go from there.

If mucus in stools was the only symptom of something wrong... what would you do?

DD2 is almost 3 weeks old and has been having mucus in her stools the past week or so. Her stools aren't green so it is really just the mucus. I am wondering what to do about the it. Is it just normal for her or is it a sign of an intolerance of some sort? DD2 is my 3rd LO but I haven't had any problems with any sensitivity to foods with either of my other LOs and I don't really know where to go from here. Call the pediatrician? Lactation consultant? Any advice???
