I am curious how this will play out for me once we have kids because I find that I use my phone most when I am tired or just bored and I suspect there will be a lot of both in the early days. There is no question in my mind though that I typically use it more than I should.

When I am with the kids I nanny for I limit my phone time to necessary text messages (their parents usually) and one or two 15 minute veg breaks while they nap depending on how long the day is. I do use it to check hours of places we are going and that type of thing occasionally too.

This is something that worries me too (for the future!) I am so dependent on my smart phone/ipad/laptop... I know I will feel deprived if I don't get my daily fix. And most of my job is spent on the laptop all day anyways.

I was at the airport a few weeks ago and was observing this family, a mom, dad (in their early 30s, I know this because I recognized the mom from college), and their toddler son. The dad was playing on his phone CONTINUOUSLY and ignoring his son. This was over the course of an hour, and then I saw the same thing happening at the luggage area. That made me really sad, and I pointed it out to DH and said I hope we don't do that one day...

I am wrestling with this and debating internally on what is right.

Our morning routine consists of getting him dressed/changed, then going downstairs, he sits in his swing while I get breakfast and while I eat breakfast, I check email, HB and FB. I usually spend about half an hour on here, and he happily swings away.

There are a few occasions he plays on the floor and I'm on my iPod or phone.

Part of me feels like I do need to spend more individual time with him (though I really do - I interact with him a ton and he is involved in so much of what I do - cooking, laundry, etc), but I know I might go crazy being an entertainer for a baby all day. At his age, he doesn't seem to notice/care/mind. I'm sure as he gets older, my tech time will be less. But this week I've been working on cutting down on PC time for sure.

I REALLY don't want DS to be a tech-junkie. He is 4 mos and has started watching the TV when DH has it on, so now it's never on while he's awake.

If the LO is playing independently by herself, I don't see anything wrong with checking my phone. She's having "her" time and I am having "me" time. Once she's done with that and wants my attention again, then I'll unplug.

I don't use my smartphone or computer around my son. When we're together, that is our time. As an example, I never text or read emails when feeding him.

I try really hard not to be on HB or other sites when my LO is awake. I do quickly check FB and email often. I spent a good part of today being unplugged and I realized how much time I really do waste playing online. Shame on me. :/

I work really hard to not take out my phone when I'm out with the kids. A lot of that is just because of safety... I've found that when I'm using my phone, I can lose track of where the kids are.

I think I have a tech addiction now... I'm trying to fix it by using a website blocker on Chrome. It can limit certain sites during certain times of the day.

I don't have kids yet but I think I do need to get a handle on this.

I read this article and realized how I am not living in the present. I have to be extra mindful of *not* opening the social media door, it's been done out of unconscious habits for so long (how quickly my fingers know which app to open next!). That means deleting certain apps on the phone and turning off app and email notifications. And what about Twitter? I love the real time news feed - well twitter can wait until after LO is in bed.

How about you? How do you find a way to unplug and still be connected?
