I have eaten a modified Paleo diet for a year. I see nothing wrong with doing a paleo diet during pregnancy but I would steer clear of a whole 30. I did one in March of this year and it is intense. In fact, I have moved away from paleo and just focus on whole foods so as to not eliminate any food groups and I feel like paleo is not long term for me though I gave it a solid shot.

@KelLeeLeee: there is an article, I think titled, "paleo diet is unhealthy uncivilized and untrue." I agree with this for the most part. I guess it is my personal opinion that paleo is like atkins with vegetables. Healthy isn't the same to me as thin and in my experience and opinion an anti-inflammatory pesco-vegetarian diet is much more conducive to health.

It is a personal decision and whatever works for you, but I am not going to not say I don't think it is a good way to eat during pregnancy. I'm not a doctor and I think talking to your OB is probably my best advice!

I ate paleo through 2nd and 3rd trimester (and for two years before that). If you describe your way of eating as the "paleo diet" people may be alarmed but it's full of super nutritious food. It's also very close to gestational diabetes diet recommendations.

Sticking to paleo made such a difference in how I felt pregnant. I'm convinced it helped cut down on swelling and carpal tunnel for me (things I experienced only when I ate non paleo food so I stopped).

I'm not on the whole gluten-free bandwagon, and I love me some dairy and I don't think there is anything bad about eating either of those things (they provide nutrition, they are not bad for you!). I also think added sugar (natural sugars like honey and maple syrup are best) is not bad either. I think eating whole foods is best. The less processed, the better. But I think the Whole 30 is too restrictive, especially during pregnancy.

@Greentea: What about paleo do you think is unhealthy? I think it's healthier than the average diet, I do not eat this way but I don't think it's unhealthy at all.

It's perfectly healthy, but you would probably need more fruit than the average person to get your carbohydrates up.

I feel you on the feeling lethargic and needing more energy, I'm a vegetarian so when I do a Whole-30, I usually call it a "Half-30" which stands for half-a$$ed. I follow most of the rules, but I also follow the vegetarian plan, which allows for full fat yogurt and tofu and non-canned beans, so I still eat chickpeas and lentils that are soaked from dried. My biggest concern personally would be the lack of dairy, since chocolate milk and yogurt are my big calcium sources. You could probably reap most of the benefits from Whole 30 by cutting out all grains and sugars, and only eating whole foods, without having to be totally strict. I think cutting sugars and carbs down would probably help with your energy levels. Or maybe you're lethargic because growing a person is darn hard.

If you've never tried to eat Paleo, I might first focus on just cutting out processed foods and added sugar first and I think you'll find that makes a huge difference in how you feel. In my personal experience, my biggest hurdle with eating this way was remembering to make sure that I was getting enough food each day and to replace the foods I was cutting out with something healthier. For example, if you're used to having an omelet and toast for breakfast, you can't just not eat the toast, you have to replace it with other nutrient rich food, otherwise you end up with a huge calorie deficit each day and are starving and miserable. Not a good place to be, especially while pregnant. But if you plan and balance your meals appropriately, I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

I'm sticking mostly to my primal diet now and though it's hard because I have nausea and sometimes bland carbs are the only things that taste good. Overall I think paleo is fine during pregnancy, but listen to your body.

@Greentea: Eh, I think the whole point of paleo is that you are eating healthy real food. For things like beans, you can get way more bang for your nutritional buck by eating dark leafy greens. I think the point of many people who eat paleo is that you can get just as many nutrients (and frequently more!) by eating vegetables than things like legumes/potatoes/grains, and without the unnecessary amount of carbs, which break down into sugars.

As I said, though, I don't strictly follow a true paleo diet, so I do eat potatoes and beans, etc.

No I do not think paleo is a healthy way to eat and especially not during pregnancy. I would focus on eating healthy real food. For example beans are a pregnancy super food!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you check out the Whole 9/Whole 30 forum, there is a section on doing a Whole30 while pregnant or breastfeeding. Lots of good information there!

Overall, I think the Whole30 is a very healthy way to eat, and using that as a guideline for your meals would be a good start to eating healthier.

Prior to getting pregnant, I ate a modified "paleo" diet (Didn't know what else to call it, but basically no carbs, no processed sugars, etc. I didn't want to cut out all dairy or legumes, but mainly ate veggies, fruit, and proteins). This first tri has been really rough, and I've been eating WAY more carbs than I usually do, but I've been trying to keep my eating to proteins, veggies, and fruits as much as I can.

I'm 12 weeks today, and am hoping that in the next few weeks, I'll start to feel better and can cut out the carbs again. We'll see! At this point, I still feel so crappy that I'm just trying to get as many nutrients for the little bub as I can, with whatever I can stomach.

I think essentially the Whole 30 and Paleo focus on eating real foods - nothing processed. In that regards, as long as you're getting sufficient calories and balanced food groups, it's perfectly fine!

Paleo gets a little stricter with their rules... I don't think you're allowed beans? Or maybe that's another one of the diets...

I would definitely look into the Whole 30 principles to start making good changes to your diet :)

I wouldn't change anything too drastically in pregnancy. But a lot of paleo ideas would be great and many women do paleo before during and after pregnancy.

The upped protein encouraged by paleo is great for pregnant women. Eating more fruits and veggies and less sugar, carbs and junk food is great. But I wouldn't do a "diet" because that is usually a restriction. Just make the healthier changes and I think you will get the benefits.

I was just wondering if it was healthy to eat paleo or even whole30 while pregnant. I've just entered my second trimester, and am feeling a little guilty about all the junk (chips. so many cheetos.) I ate in the first tri. I'm just not sure that I will get all the nutrients that I need? So I wanted to check in here and see what you all thought  I just have been feeling really lethargic (likely due a lot to pregnancy and carbs galore) and want to get a bit of energy back. I don't need to lose weight or anything, since I am at a healthy weight and actually am down 5 pounds from my healthy pre-pregnancy, so I would obviously be eating a lot with the paleo thing to keep my weight up...

Anyway, I am rambling and just have a lot of thoughts bouncing around in my head. I guess I'm asking about doing a "less-strict whole30"... which I'm aware isn't really a thing, but whatever.

Thanks in advance!
