Drop offs are more chaotic. Everyone comes around the same time and you have to walk in to the school.
At pickup the kids come to the door and then wait along a fence to be released. It's remarkably orderly for a bunch of three year olds.

It was such a mess yesterday! All parents for kids preschool-2nd grade have one small parking lot to park in and we all wait in the school lobby. When the bell rings we can go get our kids. Which is weird to me, I don't like the idea of so many people wandering around, not these days anyway! Each classroom has its own door that goes outside, I wish they dismissed that way instead. Then they have people directing traffic back out. So chaotic, I'm not looking forward to that every day.

Our preschool has a good system. All parents to go the gym and "check out" their child, and a teacher/aide goes to the classroom to retrieve the child. Parents aren't allowed to go to the kids' classroom because they don't want it to be hectic, they want to keep all kids accounted for.
We have our son taking the bus though.

@KayKay: This. The flow of the hallway where the kids are being picked up is awful. It looks like they are bringing one class of kids upstairs to be picked up to avoid some of the congestion, but some of the parents haven't gotten the memo and are downstairs anyway, which gets in the way of the lines of parents waiting to pick up from the other two classes. Kids have to be signed out, and since it's only day two of school, there isn't a great system down for all the steps that need to be done (child getting snack box from their cubby in the classroom, parent signing out the child - without entering the classroom, child getting their shoes from a bin by the door, child getting their backpack).....hopefully it gets smoother because it is currently super stressful trying to keep my two year old with me and out of the other classrooms amidst all the chaos.

I think our preschool drop-off is way more chaotic, but that's because the flow of entry into the building/classrooms is not good. So in the morning, everyone is arriving at the same time (ish), trying to go to the bathroom/wash hands, get to their cubbies, sign-in, etc. In the afternoon, it's more grab your kid and go, so there is much less commotion and chaos.

Preschool isn't but primary school is nuts! There were never any free parking spots at my son's old school unless I arrived 20 minutes early or 20 minutes late.

Not at all - it's a small school, and sometimes parking is tricky (it's on the side street next to the playground fence) but it's not busy, surprisingly. There aren't a crazy ton of kids.

Pick up isn't hectic at all because children have different schedules - some leave at 1pm, 3pm, and others until 5/6pm. DS is there until 5:15 usually so it is pretty quiet when we get there.

We also do early drop off (8:30), but have dropped off at 9 as well - and that is pretty chaotic.

At our preschool, someone stands by the door and calls for your child when they see you drive/walk up. Then your child comes outside so it's not chaotic at all.

My older daughter is in 1st grade and mainly takes the bus home. I pick her up from time to time and it's not too chaotic though. The school is very small.

It's not too bad unless it's raining and the teachers bring the kids to the covered entrance. I'm not sure how many students there are, but the center has babies up through K.

Our preschool is pretty organized. It's super small though - and the parents line up in their cars and the teachers bring out the kids to the cars!

I know when we get to pre-k/elementary its going to be chaotic!

It's complete chaos. It's a school that is elementary through high school so there are people everywhere.

LO goes to an elementary school so there are grades Preschool-2nd grade. The teachers were telling us last night that pick up is really chaotic, with parking and all the parents coming and going and the busses. Today will be our first pick up at this school, so I'm interested to see how it goes!
