I just think some parents don't know how to pick up their babies cues that great, and misread them for other things. When my nearly 7 month old DD is full she gets squirmy in her high hair and tries to grab the spoon off me. I know that she is full then, but another mother may read that differently in that the baby must still be hungry.

I do feed my baby differently though, I feed her milk first as that to me is the most important source of nutrition for her, then an hour or so later if she is looking hungry I will feed her a little bit of food, maybe just over an ounce if that? I breastfeed so have no idea of how much she drinks though.

Being able to follow babies cues is soooooo important, poor lil guy!

wow.. that does sounds like a lot of baby food for one feeding. especially for a 6 month old. Bottle wise, though, it's on the higher side, but my LO was drinking about 7 oz a feed around then. But certainly not using it to chase down that much baby food! :(

If a child is spitting up after a feeding, especially multiple times, then the child is definitely being overfed. Every time someone would feed my LO a bottle, they were convinced that he needed more milk and forced him to drink another ounce or two. DH and I would always remind them that he doesn't drink that much. A minute later, he would always spit up.

I think lots of people overfeed. One only need look at the increase of obesity in America to know that children are being overfed!

I don't know. Babies' appetites range widely. I've seen friends' babies eat that much, even though my daughter never eats like that.

Its tough to say. Sometimes kids with reflux throw up no matter how much you give them to eat. When LO's reflux was really bad I specifically asked the pedi if I should cut her off after a certain amount of nursing time and he said absolutely not. He said he would much rather that I overfeed her and have her spit some back up, then to have us pick an arbitrary amount of time to let her nurse, and then have her end up underfed. It sounds like what's she's doing is a bit more extreme then unlimited nursing though...

@Mrsbells: I don't have many mom friends so I guess that's why this struck me as odd and a little excessive - especially since the kid kept getting sick. I don't know the woman well enough to delve into the fact that he has medication for acid reflux but it still seemed really really odd.

Guess that was why I was asking. Trying to understand if maybe she was the oddball or if I am.

My guy can EAT, and I mean E-A-T (like yogurt and a whole waffle for bfast) But I don't think he could eat that much now and he is 13 months. When he was six months, never ever.

At least I know that if they eat too much they barf, that was a concern for me. DS hasn't barfed due to too much food.

@prettylizy: I intend to keep my nose out of it but I was just wondering what other people's experiences were. Besides, she's not a close friend and it's her prerogative with the kid. Although I do feel bad for him.

its hard to tell because some babies genuinely are hungrier than others, but I do know many moms that do overfeed their babies in the way you described

If he was throwing up on her, I would say she was probably overfeeding him.

C didn't eat nearly that much at 6 months old.

I guess the recent article about not starting solids too soon made me think of this but I have a friend who has a six to seven month old baby boy. While she was over recently, she commented on how much of a bottomless pit he was and then proceeded to feed him both packs of Gerber food in a two pack and then 8 ozs of a bottle! When she finished, she didn't seem terribly concerned by the fact that he then threw up on her four times and just said she needed to be sure to give him his medicine for acid reflux when they got home.

DH was around at the time and I remember us talking about it later that evening. Our son, who's 14 months old, eats more than that (obviously) but not much more than that. And when he was six months, we were lucky if he finished half of a carton of food and then some bottle, not two whole packs of food and then 8 ozs! It wasn't until recently that DS got up to about 8 ozs of liquid. Before that, he was eating comfortably at 4!

I know every child is different but doesn't this sort of feeding seem a bit excessive? Or am I over thinking this.
