We never sleep trained. CIO is just not for us. We rocked to sleep and then started putting our DD down drowsy. At 9 months if she fussed for a few minutes, as long as she wasn't full on crying, we'd pause and give her a minute to calm herself and she usually did. She is 14 months old now and we just do the same nighttime routine every night of bath, teeth brushed, pjs, story, hugs and kisses and then put her down, and she falls asleep peacefully. The routine is key to preparing them for sleep, I think.

We didn't sleep train. Thankfully we were able to put the crib in our room. She sleeps longer but still has multiple wake ups and we have to assist by finding the lost binky or giving her a bottle. Hoping she will grow out of the wakings soon. I miss sleep

@katsupgirl: depends... Usually he wakes up 15 mins or so later, but our dogs also follow me and I think they wake him. Usually when I stay in bed, I nurse him to sleep then put him in the middle of the bed and he stays asleep. Well until he wakes up to nurse again a few hours later.

@MamaJ: I'm with you on that one. In a perfect world our LO would go down in his crib then come into our bed at first wake up...if that wasn't asap after going down in his crib! ;) A couple of hours would be lovely.

@lolabee: honestly I go back and forth. Monday when we tried sleep training I told DH I missed him. I would be happy if he could sleep alone at least part of the night. That way DH and I get some time and I still get snuggle time with DS.

@lamariniere: haha BOOM! is exactly it! our LO would actually cry more each night!

No one solution works for every child. I don't believe in the 5s either. Cue horrific shock.

It did not work for us either. We tried three different times while DS was under 1 year. I always hear about people's babies crying 45min the first night and less and less on the subsequent nights and then sleeping after that and it was not our case at all. Each time he would cry 2-3 hours before we would "save" him (with regularly checking on him, of course). I just couldn't believe that that was an ok thing to do to our child, so we gave up.

DS learned to STTN by himself at 1year and 2 weeks. He went from waking up 2-3+times a night to literally, BOOM! Sleeping 10-12 hours solid the next night. He has never woken in the night since. He's now 2.5 and a fabulous sleeper. I think he really figured it out when he was ready, on his terms. Good luck, sleep deprivation is a terrible thing.

@mrskc: @regberadaisy: @MerryC: thanks! I hear all these positive sleep training stories and I'm like why isn't it working!!

@mrskc: his crib mattress might fit between my side of the bed and the wall. Maybe I'll try that! Thanks.

It didn't work for our twins until recently at 10 months (and we had to use a stay in the room method). We just had to slog through the bad sleep until then. There were so many rapid fire developmental things happening before that and we weren't ready to night wean til then. So it all just fell into place. It was really hard to deal with the bad sleep for so long, but in hindsight I'm glad we were able to figure out when they really were ready. And when they were, it worked so well and quite fast!

@MamaJ: sleep training never worked for us. LO started STTN when she was ready -at 7.5 months-. She started napping in her crib when she was ready. Some babies are just stubborn. No one size fits all and that applies to sleep as well!

Awww I'm sorry. He may just not be ready for sleep training yet. My son is 8 months and wakes a lot through the night. We ended up making a floor bed for him at the end of our bed and he sleeps some of the night down there. We now have actually moved his crib mattress down there. I set up some pillows around it and I can lay down there and nurse him to sleep, then I just sneak away.

DS is 6.5 months old and we have been cosleeping and nursing to sleep. We tried to sleep train at 3.5 months, 5 months, and then on Monday. Each time he has cried for 2+ hours and then I feel terrible for him. That's a long time!! We were doing checks but those made it worse.

I've tried ferber, extinction, nursing to sleep then putting him in the crib, nursing him in bed and escaping... Nothing works! I can't put his crib in our room because our room is too small. I don't have a pack and play and don't really want to spend the money on one (though I might could borrow my MILs if anyone has any suggestions with using it).

Is sleep training just not for some babies? I really just want my bed back and to have some time with DH. We never get anytime alone because when DS goes down so do I...
