I don't think a dedicated machine is necessary. We use an old iphone with white noise (the ocean) and it runs all night long just using the iphone speaker. When we travel, we put the white noise on one of our phones or the ipad and don't have to take something extra with us.

My husband and I still use white noise to fall asleep and leave it on all night. We use a fan, works great!

We tune the radio between stations for white noise to block out sudden noises while DS sleeps. I guess he won't need it when he's older.

We had a sleep sheep for LO, but she never really cared for having the noise turned on. I didn't think she needed noise to sleep, but then I realized that the humidifier is constantly running in her room while she sleeps- so it acts as a noise machine! She definitely slept better with a little noise.

I think it depends on your LO. For my oldest yes. For my second not so much.

White noise is essential for us, but we use an old iPhone + a dock + a free white noise app. Works great!

Yes! I think it helps Lo get back to sleep when he wakes.

Our is more for us. My daughter's room is right off our living room, and I don't want to have to tiptoe around quietly.

we lived in a small crowded space, so i wanted it to help muffle the noise. she doesn't need it, but it's part of our routine, so we do it every night/nap. but at grandma/grandpa's or sometimes DH forgets and she sleeps just fine. i get more worried about DH waking up early and then waking her up.... but who knows!

We live in a city condo, and her room is pretty close to the kitchen as well as a communal stairwell, so yes, for us it is necessary. We use a cheap homedics one that plugs in and runs all night ($20 minus 20% coupon at bbb). I feel like I would need it even more when we have two. It was nice when she was in our room in the beginning, too, so us going to bed and such wouldn't wake her.

The flip side is that she does pretty much need it, at 21 months. It's her sleep cue so we always run the sound machine or white noise app whenever she sleeps. She was a bad sleeper early on and I took all the help I could get.

I would say it is not necessary. We had an ipad and free white noise apps. And that was good for us.

we live in a tiny apt and my boys share a room. we've never used a sound machine -- I think they're great and would totally use one if needed, but for us it was not necessary :).

I think it is. We have one in each of the girls rooms. The older is 3y8m and she can sleep without it, but it really does block so much noise for her. Including some wicked loud thunderstorms we've had recently. We let them play all night long.

DD has a sleep sheep that she turns on before she goes to bed. She likes the rain and the waves sound but it shuts off after 45 minutes. She doesn't NEED it to go to sleep but it's just been a part if her bed time routine. She can fall asleep fine without it and never uses it for naps. Now that baby 2 is arriving I wonder if I should invest in a better sound machine. The new baby will be in my room in the beginning. Do you think a sound machine is necessary with 2 kids? At what age did your LO stop using a sound machine? Do you play it all night?
