@ladyfingers: I actually had that problem with my daycare saying he needed more, but I stood firm that if he was happy and gaining weight appropriately, he didn't. He always fusses when he finishes a bottle, but with a little distraction, he's fine. Kid just likes to eat. He is fat and happy with his 5 oz bottles.

@ladyfingers: Just wanted to add another voice that intake was stable for my LO throughout her time in daycare (we had a shorter daycare day and she took 5 1/2 oz bottles twice a day). She actually started drinking less over the last month or so.

I was able to get away with no pumping outside of work hours for most of the time, except for the occasional late night pumping session if she did not want to eat and I felt uncomfortable. Then I got sick with a bad cold when she was about 9 months and ended up adding in a 9 pm session to keep up until she hit 12 months.

So I would drop it as long as you are keeping up, and you can always add it back in later if needed. Once you pump at that time regularly for a few days, your body will adjust...Good luck with the transition back to work!

@Mrs. High Heels: Oh, I know. I'm defining STTN as actually sleeping THROUGH the night, though ;) Since he feeds every 3-4 hours overnight, I don't feel like I necessarily "need" to pump before bedtime. But if he did start sleeping longer stretches, I would probably pump before bed just because I'd be crazy engorged by the time morning rolled around.

But yes, medically, he has been STTN for a while!

@ladyfingers: at his age, the definition for STTN is this pattern (according to the "experts")... 4+/2.5-4/2.5-4 (cut-off for first feed/ cut-off for next feed/ etc).

for example: he sleeps from

7-11 pm (4 hrs)... then wakes to feed
12-3 am (3 hrs)... then wakes
4-7 am (3 hrs)... then wakes for the day

that would be STTN for his age!

@Amelieisme: @Mrs. High Heels: I was under that impression too but then I read conflicting things, particularly for kids in daycare whose providers insist they need more milk. Good to know it sort of "tops out" at 6 oz though.

I did end up manually pumping last night which was much less of a pain somehow. I got 2 oz so it was worth it at least :) Pumped almost 8 oz in this morning's session, though!

@Amelieisme: Yeah he's nowhere near STTN but I may end up pumping more regularly before bed if he ever does.

One thing I learned from HB is that with breastmilk babies, their quantity of breastmilk doesn't necessarily increase with age, but the quality of it continues to change to meet their growing/changing needs! So like @amelieisme mentioned, even at 9-12 months, he'll probably only be taking 4-6 ounces still!

As far as his demands, they really shouldn't increase with age. I returned to work at 8 weeks and he took three 5 oz bottles/day. He is now 9 months and still takes that.

Can't really answer the pumping question as our situation was different. He started STTN at 8 weeks and I didn't get up and pump in the middle of the night, but I do struggle with supply. I still do the 9 pm pump though.

That's awesome that your pump output is exceeding demand! Maybe drop the extra pump and just monitor your supply for a week or so? You can always add it back in if you need to.

From what I've read the golden rule is to allow roughly 1-1.5 ounces of breastmilk for each hour away and as your LO gets older the calorie and nutrition content of your milk will change so the volume he require shouldn't increase too drastically.

I would drop the 9 pm pump - may take a few days to adjust it with the 12 and 3 am feedings I bet you will be fine!

Relax at that time! Hope your first day back went well for you both!

Today was my first day back at work/DS's first day at daycare. He drank 12 oz and I pumped 14. He's 12 weeks old.

I know these numbers will fluctuate -- some days I'll pump more or less. But as time goes on he'll be taking more in a bottle, right? Which means I'll have a pumping deficit. Right?

Which brings me to my question. I have been inconsistently pumping at 9 pm near the end of my leave so I could sock away a few bags in the freezer. I'd planned to continue this, but it looks like for now, I'm able to keep up with him between my 3 work pumping sessions. So is the 9 pm pump really necessary for now? Can I just do it on days when I don't get enough at work? Or will pumping do such a number on my supply that I'll need the 9 pm pump to keep my supply up?

Basically I hate pumping and hate the idea of doing it a 4th time at night when all I want to do is relax. I'm drinking 3 cups of nursing tea during the day thinking that might bump output up a bit...

ETA the current schedule is roughly:
Nurse 6 am
Pump 8:30 am (DS takes bottle at daycare)
Pump 12:00 pm (DS takes bottle at daycare)
Pump 3 pm (DS takes bottle at daycare)
Nurse 6 pm
Nurse midnight
Nurse 3 am

On weekends I'll only nurse, no pumping, but might do a 9 pm pump in those days.
