@winniebee: Yes, I'm sure there is a reason for the madness :) I do hope it resolves soon though. Does he have a fever or anything else? I felt like Soph had a very very low grade fever the week or so before the tooth and coincided with the night wakings. Go with your gut though if you feel that CIO could be beneficial for all!

@phdmommy: The proof is in the tooth! My son has been the same way (5 drool bibs a day and very aggressive with chewing for months). The up for awhile in the middle of the night thing has only happened 2 times previously, ever, even as a baby....both due to sickness. So, I feel like there's gotta be an explanation!

@winniebee: Yeah, I hope that is the explanation for it. I've tried giving her a bottle when she would wake up earlier (b/w 8-10 pm) but she would only take an ounce or so and sometimes spit it out screaming. That's when I figured something else was up and I knew she wasn't just hungry. And teething seems to fit. I was skeptical if she really was teething though b/c she's been drooling and chewing on things for months. But I guess the tooth proves it :)

Hope your LO can get back on track and that you can get some good rest!

@winniebee: going through the exact same thing. My LO just turned 6 months last week and previously has been sleeping through the night since 12 weeks old. The past couple of weeks she's been waking up 3+ times/night and sometimes waking up SCREAMING and unable to be soothed. Turns out, she's getting her first tooth. Started coming through yesterday. I'm kinda assuming that's what it is. Maybe your little guy is teething too?

I wondered if I should let her CIO or self soothe when she wakes up, but I think that would be more stressful on us all. As it is now, when she wakes I just go put her back on her back and put her passy in and she falls back to sleep. If she weren't able to go back to sleep I might consider CIO.

Thankfully, last night (after a rough bout at 8 -9 pm) she slept through the entire night. I feel so different today that I slept straight through the night too!

@winniebee: I've read that babies process napping and night sleep in inferential parts of their brain your LO may be able to put himself down for naps but may need help for night sleep.

I used to rock DS until drowsy. When I put him in the crib he would wake briefly but fall back asleep. However once 6 months hit, all that went out the window.

Since you get your DS drowsy before bedtime, maybe he's experiencing the same thing as my DS and is needing help getting back to the drowsy state when he gets to the light sleep cycles.

We had a bout 3 weeks of rough sleep right around when she turned 6 months. Up every couple of hours, random screaming, etc. We came out the other side swaddle-weaned and STTN.

Good luck!

@NerdBee: SAME. He did the 10 pm thing a few times last week and I thought he was just hungry or having a growth spurt, but it's gotten progressively worse.

@krsmall: Hit or miss. Used to have 30 min naps but the naps have lengthened a little lately. Yesterday he was up for the day at 5:30 took a nap from 6:45-7:30 and then took 2 other 40 minute naps and a 1 hour nap from 4-5. Bed at 7:30. Woke at 10 and was up until 11. Woke at 2 and was up til 2:30. Woke for day at 5:30.

@NerdBee: Yeah he has a bedtime bottle and gets drowsy - I burp him and he's awake (but eyes closed/sleepy) when I put him down. I can put him down for naps awake and he'll fall asleep after some fussing.

How is he napping during the day? Our daytime naps are awful but he's still sleeping through the night so I just move up his bed time because he's not napping.

We went through the same thing and CIO was not our solution (tried it). It was 3 weeks long and now he's back to normal, just days before his 7 month birthday. I did think of a million reasons for what it 'could' be, but now that you are writing this, maybe it's just a 6 month thing.

@winniebee: now that you mention it, that's how it started for us too. DS would go down fine and wake up at around 10-11pm. I thought maybe he was going through a growth spurt and fed him. But then it started to get worse and worse until we resorted to CIO.

Does your DS fall asleep by himself?

@c.sassy: Hm. He doesn't show any signs of separation anxiety during the day at all - and he goes to anyone and everyone happily. But now that you mention it he never wanted to be cuddled or rocked at night and now he does.

He's also doing this weird thing where when he is fussing in his crib following a feeding he's doing the "inch worm" - like trying to crawl.

He could be showing signs of separation anxiety a little early. I talked to our ped about it Tuesday because LO is also 6 months but has recently started showing some signs of separation/stranger anxiety. She said that it usually doesn't happen until 9 months or so, but it's not uncommon for it to start at this age. She said that most of the time it manifests itself at night with multiple wakings (and not really hungry). We haven't gotten to that point yet, but I expect it to happen.

@NerdBee: Thanks for your insight! He still goes down ok initially - but he's been waking at like 10 every night and then NOT going back down after that. He'll be "asleep" after his bottle (sometimes he doesn't even take a whole bottle, indicating to me that he is NOT hungry) but then awake the second I put him in the crib and he starts fussing. Then if I pick him up to soothe him or rock him, he's quiet. This goes on for a while. Last night after an hour he went back to sleep on his own. So, I'm wondering if maybe he's not hungry at that first wake and instead there's something else giong on. He's never had trouble going back to sleep after a feeding in the middle of the night. Then later, he wakes at like 2 (again, earlier than his "normal" night waking) and does drink a full bottle and does fuss when I put him down but a little ssshhhing and he goes to sleep. He's had a cold but he's had it for like 3 weeks so it seems odd that this behavior is manifesting itself now.

I think CIO might be on the horizon.

We went through something similar at around 6 months. He used to go down easy with rocking and stay down until morning. At around 6 months, it started taking longer to put him down and he would wake up at 2, 3, or 4am. When it got to the point where I had been rocking him for 2 hours and he was still screaming his head off and waking after only 45 minutes once he fell asleep, we decided that to let him cry it out. We figured that whether he cried in our arms or in his crib wouldn't make too much difference. He ended up crying for about an hour before falling asleep by himself. It took a few days but now he goes down really easy by himself and no more night wakings.

For my son, I think it was an issue of object permanence. He was waking up because he was being rocked to sleep and was freaking out when he would wake up in bed by himself.

I don't know if cry it out would be right for you but that was out experience. Hope you get some sleep soon. I know how much it sucks. *hugs*

My normally up 0-1 time a night sleeper has had awful sleeping past 3 nights. Up every few hours and not going down after feedings. What gives? New skill? Teeth (none yet)? He will be 6 mos in a few days. Do we need to start CIO? Any insight?
