For preschool friends, I try to stick to $20. I find an item and buy multiples. I find it much easier this way.

For family, I will buy something a little more oriented to their tastes if possible.

$20-25 for everyone. I try to make the gift thoughtful and specific for the child, not just something top of the line. Some of the most appreciated gifts we've given were also the least expensive.

LO doesn't go to daycare so it's not like we go to tons of toddler parties. I don't really have a set budget for birthday gifts. LO has a good buddy who had a party at his house and I think I spent about $50. Location or perceived cost of the party wouldn't make a difference to me. It's all based on relationships and I do factor in appropriate reciprocation if they've given LO a gift before.

I guess I'm cheap, but I only spend about $15. Once my son started preschool and we hired a super outgoing nanny, we are invited to so many parties( we also have 3 kids). I spend a little more on my dozen neice's and nephews, but I guess less than most on here!

$20ish for acquaintances
$30-$40 for close friends

I don't usually adjust for venue but if I know that they tend to spend more on gifts than I tend to go to the higher end if my budget.

Art supplies and books are my go to gift options unto they are big enough for science type kits and then I switch to those.

Usually spend around $30. I try to get an outfit on sale from ON or Gap and then a small toy that I think they will like. Ie a large hello kitty puzzle for my friends 4 year old who is HK obsessed and a cute dress from ON.

The only family we buy for is my cousins kids as we don't have nieces or nephews. So I usually just get them a toy or outfit. For her sons first birthday I got a ride on toy. For Christmas they each got an outfit because my cousin said they had wayyyyy too many toys.

The only time party location would factor would be if I knew it included entrance or tickets to the place. Like an aquarium or museum etc. I would feel bad showing up with two parents and a child with just a $20 gift knowing the hosts maybe had spent at least that for our family to be there. I guess kinda the mind set of a wedding and trying to gift to cover the cost of your plate?

I would give the same amount for a home or venue party. People rent tents, bounce houses, and tables & chairs and have food catered so it's not like the home parties are always lower cost.

I usually spend around $50 sometimes more, but I only gift to close friends' kids. If it was my child's classmate I'd probably max a gift at $20.

I wasn't sure where to post this so hope it's okay that it went in the general board.

When it comes to giving gifts at birthday parties, is there a general budget you go by for others' kids? For example, how much do you usually spend for a 1-year old's gift? Does it differ with different ages and, if so, how much more/less do you spend depending on age?

I tend to spend more for first birthdays since in the Korean culture they are considered a big milestone. I also spend a little more (maybe about $10 more) for the child if we are closer to the family versus if we just met or are acquaintances. I would say I budget about $50 for first birthdays (or $75 if our families are close, $100-$150 if we are family). For other birthdays, I would say I budget about $20-25.

Lastly (sorry for the multi-question post!), does your gift budget change depending on the location of the birthday party (i.e. do you spend more if the party is located at a special venue like a bounce party place versus a birthday party held at home)? If so, how?

Just curious to see how others budget for birthday gifts that are given to other kids!
