this blog post from this former weddingbee-er I thought was very helpful:
http://www.geekinheels.com/2012/07/02/how-to-cut-babies-nails.html

however i still shy away from cutting my LO's nails ever since i accidentally clipped some skin when she was a few months old, and boy was she peed off, and have been filing her nails with an emery board every week or so, it might take a little longer than clipping, but i never worry about clipping her skin.

Scissors are my new easy way to do this with LO awake--I use a mini pocket knife's scissors.

When DD was little I would either cut them while she was nursing or deep asleep. Now that she is older I can't do that anymore so we almost always do it after her bath (nails are softer and I find easier to cut) and I let her pick which is first her fingers or toes. I let her hold her lovey or suck her thumb since that comforts her and do it as quickly as possible. After I am done there are lots of kisses and snuggles as a congratulations for being a big girl.

It used to take two people. I would clip and DH would distract by doing silly things/making silly faces. Now that she is older I try to reason with her more. "If you want to do this next, I'm going to have to clip your nails first."

@banana: she also HATES toe nail clipping. what's the difference??

I have this issue too. LO is too light of a sleeper to do it in her sleep, and she's not interested in TV or videos yet. I try to make a game out of it and say things like "Boom!" each time I snip a nail, then I cheer each time I'm done with a nail. That keeps her attention long enough for me to do a whole hand usually, and I'll just do the next hand the next day.

I use scissors too, he actually gives me his hand to cut his nails now.

I also learned not to cut them after a bath, they're way too soft.

I love these nail scissors! I've been using them since my baby was a newborn and so far, they've worked great. http://www.amazon.com/PIYO-BABY-NAIL-SCISSORS-Precision/dp/B004DFO57M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343098905&sr=8-1&keywords=piyo+piyo

I usually trim LO's nails while she's nursing or napping.

@yoursilverlining: Me too. I wait till he's asleep. Or... DH holds him and "chats" with him so he's very distracted.
A friend recommended to me to bite them if I couldn't clip them.

I do it when he's napping in the car. Kinda gross cause there's nail clippings everywhere but we just vacuum them up. He doesn't mind me clipping his finger nails but he HATES when I clip his toenails. He seriously acts like I'm gonna chop off each toe one by one.

I have always tried to clip nails when they are asleep also. Just gently pull the skin back on the pad of their finger and do a quick clip.

DS HATES getting his nails clipped. I have never cut too short or hurt him, he just doesn't like me restraining his hand to clip them. He fights and screams and hates me for a while after. Any tips or suggestions to make it less of a struggle?
