We kept him covered and in the shade but did use baby sunblock on his face, lower legs and backs of hands (the only exposed parts). Until then you want them out of the sun anyways. Babies can't regulate their temp that well and can over heat easily so you wouldn't want them in the sun much anyways. You want sunblock.
