That's my plan unless I'm induced again. I liked my epi but the sciatic pain was still brutal....so we'll see. Playing it by ear.

I had one the first time with DD. I think I got it around 7 or 8 cm. I was fearful if what the pain was going to be so i got it before my pain level was unbearable. The placement of the epi was the worst part of my labor and wanted to avoid it with #2. But with DS my labor was very different and my pain was off the charts by 5 cm. so I got an epi, 2 actually because the first only took on one side. He was much larger than DD (9.8 vs 6.5 lbs) not sure if that had anything to do with the difference. Both labors were short, less than 10 hours, and I pushed 20 min with DD and even less with DS. But recovery was still easier the 2nd time.

similar to @pinkelephant: and @lamariniere: for me. i had a looooong labor with LO1 (48+ hours) and got the epidural because i was already exhausted when they admitted me and just wanted to get some sleep! With LO2, there was only 2.5 hours between first inkling of a contraction and baby in my arms. they didn't even get an IV in me, let alone an epidural! i would say the pain was not any worse than with LO1.

that being said, i planned to get the epidural, or at least IV/oral pain meds with LO2. whoops!

I'm considering it. I just didn't have that painful of a labor with DD1 until transition and they realized she was sunnyside up, so they gave me the epidural at like 8-9 cm because the doc wanted to manually turn her and try to get her to turn on her own. She did, quickly, and i started pushing about 20 minutes later. The epidural was so light that it took the edge off but I really think i could feel 75% of what was going on. But I was glad I got it because the doc trying to turn her was pretty much the worst pain of the whole thing.
Part of me is afraid that this one is going to come too fast for an epidural so I'm trying to psych myself up for a med free birth. Plus, this hospital has a birthing tub so I may try to take advantage of it. I'm going to just go in with the same mindset -- whatever happens happens!

Similar story to @lamariniere:

I actually managed to get one in, but delivered about 10 mins later and it didn't take effect until I was trying to move from the table to a wheelchair to go to my room.

Just wanted to add that i wasn't necessarily trying to go without meds and i would have asked for the epi if i thought i needed it!!

I had a long, medicated and intervention-filled labour with my first and got the epi after 20ish hours but gave birth with just gas for my second. My second labour still took twelve hours and baby was 9lb 12oz but my contractions were more efficient so i wasn't half as tired and the gas was enough to keep me focussed and take the edge off the pain.

Labour was definitely unpleasant without the epidural but recovery was much easier.

I had a very similar labor and I also did NOT feel like the epidural was 100% effective especially towards the end. Hello 5 hours of pushing. It helped me immediately but It was around 12 or 1am when I got it and by 7am I was feeling the pains A LOT. I am hoping if I go more quickly I can go without, or at least I can have a more effective epidural. I'm also going to wait and see if I need it- which is what we did last time too.

I intended on going med free + having a water birth with my first but I became preeclamptic and was induced so my plans went out the window. I ended up being stuck in bed and had multiple attempts at an epidural.

I was able to go med free and labor in tub with my second. what a difference it made, not even having an IV! My recovery was wonderful.

My sister in law did but not on purpose. Her 2nd was so fast, she was crowning when she got to the hospital so no time for an epidural.

I got an epidural the first time, but will try natural this time. I actually just totally stalled--was at 2 cm for 13+ hours of really intense contractions (shot to 6 immediately after getting the epidural). If the same thing is happening this time, I'll get the epi much more quickly, but my doc and the nurse were both really encouraging about trying for natural this time, since my body might "remember." On the other hand, I actually had a really fantastic experience with the epidural, so I'm definitely not opposed.

I wasn't able to get an epidural either time, but I can say that the second time is definitely faster and easier, so if you were able to get through the worst of it with your epidural worn off, I think you'll be able to get through it all the second time without one, if that's what you decide to do! <3

but went without for their second?

I had a long labor with DS1, checked into hospital when I was at 4cm, with walkable/talkable contractions at 8pm, didn't get an epi til 3am, and delivered DS at just past noon the next day. I pushed for two hours and the epi def wore off before then. It was the worst pain/part of labor/delivery for me.

I had an IV edema and swelled up like the Michelin man the week following delivery.

I don't have any set plans and really am of the camp of "healthy mama, healthy baby," but I am def wanting to try and go natural this time since I didn't really feel complete relief from the epidural the first time.
