@mrbee: that was what my dad always said to me. It's so great that you recognize and are working on it!

Me. Jacks always says "We're not going to go down this road!" And it makes me laugh every time :D. I'm sure I have a script too, he just hasn't pointed it out to me yet!

@looch: my 2nd grade teacher banned us from using "easy" or "hard." Depending on the use the words were either boasting or minimizing someone else. She always said things were either less or more difficult depending on the task or student. I like the challenging spectrum too!

@pui: My DH & I (mostly me but him too) are working on this.

She whines every single night while I cook dinner. It gets in my brain space and I often find myself sighing and saying "LO, stop" & I hate that. I don't want to talk to her that way. Especially at the end of the day.

I am trying to be careful about calling things hard/difficult and instead calling them challenging.

Mostly I'm trying to work on how DH and I talk to each other in front of her. Be more polite, more gentle, ect. I know she'll absorb what we do so we have to be the best role models possible.

@MrsF: I like to use "got it!" after instructing LOs. Typically it's met with a head nod or resounding "yes" or high five.

We need to stop saying "ok?" after asking her to do something or telling her the plan. It has to be ok whether she likes it or not - so why am I asking?! It just seems to come naturally.

I'm trying not to do the "worn out/exasperated" voice. My mum used to do it with me - "Oh, will you please just stop?", "You're giving mummy a headache", "I give up, just do what you like" - and I can remember how unimportant it made me feel, like I was just a nuisance. I've noticed myself falling into it with E - "Mummy's had a long day, will you please just let me put your PJ's on" - and I hate it.

A few months ago I found myself saying, "What's wrong with you????" to my son. Ugh even as I said it, I already regretted it. I've been working so hard to stop raising my voice and saying things I might regret, and have made a lot of progress in the past few months. But I found myself saying "what's wrong with you?" to him a few weeks ago, and just felt awful about it. Never again.
