I would definitely bring it up to your Ped. If anything, at this point it will likely be a watch and wait, but in the meantime you can be sure she doesn't do repetitive motions that could cause future joint pain.

I think this definitely warrants a discussion with your pediatrician. They will be best able to tell you if this is something to just keep an eye on, or if some intervention is needed.

If she does the splits frequently while sitting I think there's a good chance it's hypermobility. Have you brought it up with your ped before?

@charlotte: no need to apologize, not your fault. I've actually been worried about her always doing the splits for awhile even before your thread. Thanks for chiming in.

@luckylifemummy: thanks

@bookwormmama: yeah the floors did cross my mind at first but then I notice she does the same in our carpeted bedrooms too. But maybe she got used to doing it that way on the wood floors so just kept at it.

My first thought was maybe she's doing the splits like that to help her grip on your wood floors. Her pants would be slippery and hard to do a regular knee crawl, so maybe she's using her feet to help her grip and move forward?

I have no experience with hypermobility, so I don't know if it is something else, but those were my first thoughts after dealing with kids crawling on slippery wood floors!

It looks to me like she's flexible. I'm not super familiar with hypermobility, but DD did some "interesting" crawling techniques when her first started...

Sometimes she would rock back and forth on her knees and squawk, and then crawl backwards...

the video is too cute

@iluvboba637: I posted the hypermobility thread so thought I would chime in! First, the video is so cute! My daughter never really did it like that, her first crawl (at 12m or maybe even later) was a true army crawl where she could not get her chest or belly off of the floor. Yours seems like she has way more core strength! Also, DD hates bearing weight at 17 months  If you're getting a minute now then I think she's well on her way to building that time up and reaching for toys on the sofa, sidestepping around the furniture, etc. She may be flexible but I wouldn't be extra worried! I'm guessing your pedi will say the same but it's great to ask.

Apologies if we caused any worry!

@2littlepumpkins: she, like older brother, has always reached milestones at the latter end of the normal range. She's 10 months now and barely started this inchworm crawling. She's been rolling across the room forever before this. She sits up fine but usually legs are splayed out in a V, frequently in splits too, unless we move them for her.

I don't know about hypermobility but I would have just thought of that as scooting if I saw it in my own kids and would be waiting on more official "crawling." Has she been typical re: timing of physical milestones?

https://vimeo.com/204298660?ref=em-v-share

I just read a previous thread about hypermobility and it reminded me about Dd always doing the splits. Now I'm freaking about that something is wrong with her hips or low tone or something.

She frequently does the splits when sitting and now while inch-worm crawling too
Even when we pick her up she sometimes has her legs spread wide open
She almost always sleeps in starfish position
And she will bear weight but for no more than a few minutes at a time.

I emailed the pedi tonight but i don't think I'm gonna get any sleep tonight. Kicking myself for reading the hyper mobility thread and threads about hip dysplasia etc. :(
