@Corduroy: it depends on hospital policy. My hospital only allows one support person, but you can make s request ahead of time for a second person, it just requires their approval.

@mrsrain: Do you know if that is true if only one person is allowed in for the C section? I don't know anything about C section logistics.

One benefit to having a doula at a c-section is that daddy can stay with baby and doula can be there for mom until she is in recovery.

Thanks, for the info. I can see the value in having a doula there as an advocate. She really doesn't trust our HMO so having someone else might be good.

My doula has supported/attended both planned and emergent csections! I think it would still be worth having that support person there, *especially* if her and her husband are first time parents. Plus birth doulas often also come for a couple of visits after the birth of the baby to help with breastfeeding and check in on recovery so that would be helpful too!

No experience, but could a midwife offer these services? Around here, birth by midwife is the norm, and they follow women throughout pregnancy.

I have a friend who had a doula for her planned csection. She found it really valuable to have a non-spouse person there to advocate for her and to communicate with the nurses and such. This is totally a thing!

I bet any good doula would be open to adjusting her package options. And I know some people who really wanted a doula with their c-sections!

Is there such a thing as a doula that can be hired for support just for pregnancy and not attend the birth?

My friend is having a high risk pregnancy and anticipates she'll have a C-section. She asked me about having a doula. My initial response was that she had no need. But I found my doula very helpful and calming in 3rd trimester (when I was sent for growth scans, low weight gain, etc). My friend doesn't have a lot of family and might benefit from some extra support pre- and post- baby. I know there are post partum doulas. Has anyone seen doula services like that pre-labor?
