@Caly: My RE offered "shared risk" through a third party...however I didn't qualify due to a prior m/c (not failed IVF).

My clinic had a Shared Risk plan, which gave 6 fresh cycles and any subsequent FET for a flat fee of 22k (before meds - meds are paid per cycle and can be like $3500-5500/cycle). The 22k is refunded if you don't have a live baby at the end (you can even withdraw at any time for a full refund).

I'm a huge fan of the Shared Risk program because I failed out of mine, and got 22k back to put towards moving on to other interventions. With all the technological advances, you're still not guaranteed a baby with IVF. I wish I'd understood that reality better- I never dreamed I'd be sitting here still without a baby, six fresh IVF cycles, one FET and three early miscarriages later.

The next step for us is donor eggs, and they offer Shared Risk programs for those too. They're a bit more expensive at the start ($30,500) but the most expensive meds are included so there's only a few hundred extra dollars per cycle on top.

@mrbee: I think it is often called "shared risk" IVF.

Yup, my clinic offered it as a guarantee.

Single plans cost $14k.

For guarantee take home baby plans cost me $28k but did not include meds. I think it included 3-4 Embryo retrivals and unlimited transfer.

I considered doing the guarantee plans but it was more expensive.

I took the chance that our one IVF cycle would work. If it didn't work, I would be screwed or would have to push back our next IVF cycle until we saved up more money.

ETA: oh, those were the cost given to me considering I would be under 31 when I started. I know the prices went up if I was older.

I did what our clinic called "Shared Risk." We paid a set amount that included 2 fresh cycles and as many FET's (frozen embryo transfers) that resulted from those fresh cycles. A pregnancy was guaranteed til 38 weeks if I remember correctly. If a miscarriage occurred before that point, you could continue with what cycles you had left. If no viable pregnancy resulted from those 2 fresh cycles or FET's, you could choose half your money back or one more fresh cycle. You do have to qualify medically for the program...can't be over a certain age, have past failed IVF cycles, etc.

Eta: the plan did not include meds or the anastesialogist fee which was a few hundred.

My RE offers a sort of insurance. If you go through a fresh cycle and it's unsuccessful then use all your frozen embryos and still aren't pregnant she will waive her fees for another fresh cycle. So all you'd pay would be the lab fees. It winds up being about a 50% discount.

My office offered this, though we didn't purchase that plan. Because I was a good responder to Clomid (4 eggs on 50 mg) our hope was that I'd retrieve enough eggs that we could just do FET if the first fresh cycle didn't work. We could have have done two FET cycles and the cost would have still been less than the "guarantee" package plan. If I'm remembering correctly, Mrs Green Grass did a package like that, though.

Yes, I've heard of this. I have a friend that went through IVF and it was a guarantee through her specific clinic to go through 3 rounds or get (at least a large portion) of her money back. I believe there was an age cutoff though and she was above it. I want to say it was 39, but not sure at all...

I don't think it's presented as insurance, but it's presented as a guarantee. Others can feel free to comment, but I want to say that it's like $40K, but they'll guarantee a live birth from it.

Can you pay more than usual for an IVF procedure, and then if the IVF fails... you're guaranteed up to ___ rounds of IVF for "free"? The catch would be that if the first IVF is successful, then you wouldn't get that extra money back. It would go to help fund the IVF rounds for other people who paid extra.

Wondering if something like this exists... I googled "IVF insurance" and mostly saw articles about how IVF isn't usually covered by insurance. So thought I'd check in here and ask...
