I think I'm close to my limit on picture books. We have a lot of them and use them daily. However, I ruthlessly weed out and donate ones that don't pass my "I love this" test.

I use the library a lot (at least weekly, and often more frequently) and love it, but it has limitations. There are excellent books that are out of print or really hard to find in library systems and some are amazing works of art that I want to enjoy in volumes that are free from peanut butter smears. :) Those are the ones I have bought for our collection.

@daniellemybelle: Oh see, I don't bother with sticking to the appropriate time of year, lol. My son picks whatever he happens to see in the particular row we're in.

Yes. We have a lot of books we don't need. Duplicates and others that have been read out in this house - not favorites anymore. You can have too many books!

@pinkcupcake: Agreed. We have received a lot of books as gifts or hand-me-downs that are pretty meh.

@looch: I have tried to use the library more for topical books, like if we need to read about a specific problem we're having ("Hands Are Not For Hitting") or seasonal books. But for example at Halloween almost all the Halloween books were checked out by Oct 1! So you really have to be on it!

I don't rotate anything, so unless there is space on a shelf for books, they can't stay in the house.

I've just basically stopped buying books "just because" and use the library much more now.

I have too many books. My MIL is a former librarian and gives us 15-20 books at a time and will often give duplicates. It's overwhelming. My mom, a teacher, will not give my kids books because she knows we have too many and she feels like she's been robbed of an opportunity. My MIL will also buy books that my son is not quite ready for yet bc she is also buying for my niece who is 1 year older, so I have to store books on my shelves that he doesn't have the patience for or I have to put them away and I forget exactly what we have. And because she used to be a librarian, she is very attached to these gifts and would be hurt if we gave as many away as I would like to. Not to mention that now that is something extra I have to do. It's really made me dislike books.

Team No Such Thing As Too Many Books!

I do separate them out though and make sure that everything that is out is age appropriate. We received loads of books when DD1 was younger that were far too wordy for her attention span, so I've kept those packed away and have gradually been introducing them as her attention span grows. I do the opposite with the baby books - it's been on my list to pack up some of the touch and feel baby books, and baby's first words books, as both LOs have outgrown them by now.

The other thing I do is rotate location of books - DD1 has a bookshelf in her room, as does DD2, we have a bookshelf in the playroom, and a basket of books in the lounge. By moving them around a bit, it varies the books they look at a bit more as they use each location very differently (eg DD1's bedroom books are ones she generally looks at independently during nap time/rest time, playroom books are ones I generally read aloud during the day, etc).

Other than that though, the more books the better!

We have hardly any. We go to the library every week and get new ones. She loves it! I have moved almost every year (3 places and she is 2, for example), and don't prefer posessions.

I think it is cool though and that kids are lucky to have books!

I think you can never have too many. That said, I did recently sell our most babyish books and I think I'll be able to weed out more baby books in the next few months, but we had maybe 250 children's books. We don't really buy toys except for birthdays or Christmas, but we are much more generous about buying books. The only real downfall is if you move. Books are a pain to transport!

You can never, ever have enough kids books! We keep them all out but E goes through phases of choosing the same few and then revisits them months later. E gets something new out of a book every time we revisit it. First it was pictures (point to the mouse, where is the cat), then numbers (how many mice? How many cats?), now its words she recognises (that says mouse! That says cat!).

Oh gosh I believe in too much of a good thing, but we strive for minimalism at our house, and constantly make goodwill piles. I'd say LO has about 50 books, and I recently got rid of 10-15 that we never read, but I am ok with adding new books.

We have books on the art shelf in the living room, which are any seasonal books that I rotate often. The girls also have 8 picture ledges in their playroom and a cube shelf with one cube full of books. LO1 has a bookshelf that has one full shelf of books and LO2 has a basket full of books in her room.

I don't think you can ever have too many books, but since they are going to be getting a few more books for Christmas I'm wondering if I should go through and get rid of some that don't get as much love. I actually just donated 75+ this past summer! 85% of them are bought used, some are gifted and lately some I have bought through the Scholastic Book Club, can't beat good deals on new books!

So I would say we have several hundred kids books, board books as well as paperback books. No doubles! Would you go through and get rid of some more, or are you in the "you can never have too many books", camp? How many books would you say your LO has?
