I think putting him in the crib slightly awake is a great habit. If baby is not overtired during the day and sleeping at night, I think what you're doing is perfect! If you want to get him to be more of an independent sleeper, maybe reduce the soothing time as time goes on?

My DD never took a pacifier, but she did like to cuddle and nurse down to sleep until 19 months (for both nap and bed). It was a bit of a struggle to cut off the nursing at a later age, but I think you have some time before your LO gets really stubborn hahaha. I still cuddle DD to sleep for a few minutes in her bed or the rocking chair, and I plan to do this until she resists hahaha.

I think paci is fine, but I'm in the midst of struggling with the rocking to sleep part. My LO is 10.5 months, and needs to be rocked to sleep. She will not go down (for naps or at night) if she is one bit awake, she will just lay in the crib and scream......I wish I would have known it was going to be this big of an issue 4-5 months ago!

I say pacifier is fine but try to cut down on rocking! As baby gets older that's a harder habit to break. Maybe start by rocking for 5 mins or something then less and less each night.

I say do what works for now and worry about potentially having to break a bad habit later, if it ain't broke don't fix it!!

Agreed with @edelweis. My older had her pacifier until 17 months when I decided it was time to take it away. My younger has it still at 17 months and I'm waiting to take it until after an upcoming vacation. We have now limited it to only sleeping at home (daycare doesn't give it for nap).

What was more problematic for us with our older was the rocking routine. We did it until it was too much (our rocking time increased with age) for us to handle anymore. With #2, I wasn't willing to make that nighttime commitment when I had another kiddo to get ready for bed.

Whatever works for you, do it. When it stops working or you feel like you don't like the routine, change it up. :)

I don't think it's a bad habit. I did and still do whatever it takes to get DD to sleep. She is a paci-addict! But I do want to wean her off before she's 2.

i think whatever works for you and the baby is fine, and not a bad habit. you'll know if/when there needs to be a change (ex. the routine doesn't help him fall asleep anymore, you can't/don't want to do the routine anymore...). otherwise, i say keep on--sounds like it's working!

In my honest opinion I think it depends on the kid!
I nursed DD to sleep or pretty close until 8-9 months I think?! Also rocked her and she was fine when we stopped, and just took to the new routine!

DS is 6mo old. His sleep time routine for both naps and night time involves a paci while being held in the rocking chair (5-20min) till he is really sleepy but not asleep and then placed in the crib. He is generally a good napper/sleeper, he doesn't sleep with the pacifier, so I never thought much about it. But now am thinking this may be bad in the long run.

What do you think? Is this a bad habit? Should I be actively trying to wean him off this routine?

Did your LO just naturally drop their pacifier need? Or does there always need to be an intervention?
