@MamaBehr: just water-he ended up taking to it OK without mixing any breastmilk. I wouldn't say he loves it. He still prefers breastmilk, but he will eat it.

@MamaBehr: we ended up using soy for a few months with my LO. We tried nutramigen and alimentum and she HATED both. Like straight up threw that bottle across the room and gagged.
I sorta cringed that I had to give her soy but hey, she was eating, her poops were normal and she was happy. Her mucousy poops were also really caustic; she had a terrible rash that wouldn't resolve despite my best efforts for weeks.

@travellingbee: We have done alimentum and nutramigen, he hates both. She sent us home with neocate yesterday, which we haven't tried yet. What are you combining the formula with? Breastmilk?

@Foodnerd81: I think the reason he's back on the milk based formula is to see if he really has a dairy sensitivity. If he does then he'll get the mucus again, if he doesn't then he won't. She said to keep me off dairy in case he does have the sensitivity, then we don't have to wait as long for the dairy to be out of my system. And the biggest thing I'm not sure about is because he IS happy and is (finally) gaining weight. We were having weight gain issues before, and I really don't want him to start refusing the formula and then start falling in percentiles again.

It doesn't make sense to me that you would have to avoid all dairy but give him a milk based formula. I have been hearing that this is over diagnosed (my pediatrician, who is also a lactation counselor, basically said she thinks this is the latest way to make moms feel bad, not in so many words exactly- though of course it IS a real thing for some babies!). I have no experience personally but if he is happy and gaining weight with what you are doing, I would probably try adding a little dairy back in to my diet and see how it goes... But not gorge on cheese right away. But again I am so far from an expert.

@MamaBehr: I think they know more about it, but do you isn't much they can do other than putting them on a hypoallergenic formula, or you eliminating things from your diet. They don't do tests for it really, because the blood and mucus in the poop is an obvious symptom. What formula did you try? We started combo-feeding with Alimentum this week and he wouldn't take more than three or 4 ounces at first, but now will take a bottle of 6 ounces. (He will take a breast milk bottle of 7 ounces).

@travellingbee: Did you find seeing a gastroenterologist helpful? I can't decide if I want to push my pediatrician for a referral or not. Clearly his symptoms are not severe, but I just hate this guessing game, especially when he'll starve himself instead of drink the dairy free formula!

Yes it sounds like a dairy sensitivity. The blood is from an inflammation of the lower colon due to irritation from certain proteins that babies can be sensitive to. According to our gastroenterologist however, it isn't dangerous and if he doesn't seem upset by it and it isn't that big a deal. They told me I could keep breastfeeding even though he was having blood in his poop.

My almost five month old was recently diagnosed with a dairy sensitivity. I don't know if I am refusing to believe it because I love cheese, or if he just has extremely mild symptoms, so I was hoping someone could help me.

Here's his story:
At two months old we introduced formula for the first time, he immediately had a mucusy poop with a little bit of blood in it. We stopped the formula and I just amped up my pumping.
At 3.5 months old we started formula again (because I couldn't keep up with the pumping) and he had no problem.
one week ago he had two poops that had mucus and a little bit of blood.
We went into the ped and they just said "dairy sensitivity" and told me to give him the dairy free formula and cut it out of my diet. The mucus seemed to be out of his poop almost immediately.
He has REFUSED the dairy free formula (both kinds) all week. He went from drinking 12 ounces of formula a day to three. And, even though I tried to just get him on straight breastmilk, he is an awful at nursing and wasn't doing a very good job. He didn't seem to have any noticeable mucus in his poop all week.
So we went back to the pediatrician yesterday and she said to keep dairy out of my diet and put him back on the regular formula to see what happens.
He had one mucus poop last night and today it was normal.

So, does this sound like a dairy sensitivity to anyone else? Is it normal for the mucus to be there one poop and not the next? He is not fussy. He is not all that gassy. He's actually my happiest baby to date. So, even if it is a dairy sensitivity would it be totally crazy to keep dairy out of my diet and keep him on regular formula (since he refused to drink the other kind)?

AH! This makes me crazy. Thanks for any insight or help.
