@Little Misters Mom: we had it for about 4 months, and what finally helped was topical erthromycin ointment. It was awful though, my son had a moderate case. This is what it looked like for us. It was red and bumpy and kind of dry looking.

@Mrs. Sunshine: No pacifier. It does seem to get better when I'm aggressive with coconut oil (but then always seems to come back). But it doesn't seem any better or worse based on whether he's teething.

@hilsy85: I just googled it. It sort of looks like that, except far more mild than the pictures. So maybe a very mild case. Have you had any luck treating it?

@Little Misters Mom: this sounds like perioral dermatitis, which my son had. Is it spreading along the side of the nose? Is there a separation around the mouth between the lips and where the bumps start, I.e. Lip, thin line of normal skin, and then bumps?

Does he use a pacifier? My LO was having the same issue. I thought everyone saying it was drool was crazy until one day I started putting chapstick on it and it cleared up. I had elminated so many things out of her diet for a while too.

Thanks for the advice. It does seem like a contact allergy to me. Guess it's time to get a blood test.

I would do allergy testing. An allergy is different than an intolerance like mspi and would best be diagnosed with a blood test. If it is an allergy you want to know what it is so you don't keep exposing him to the allergen. That could cause a more severe reaction later.

Hmm! Interesting! My DD has several food allergies, including soy. She was eating some food with pesto on it...the pesto used soybean oil. She had a rash all around her mouth from greasy fingers shoving it in (seemed like a contact rash). She also breaks out in ezcema from drinking cow's milk.

I will say, pay close attention to ingredients, there may be some common link. It's surprising to see some of the ingredients different foods have!

Good luck!

@ShootingStar: I thought that too, which is why I've ignored it for so long. But it seems to spread above his mouth and to his cheeks as well. And would a drool rash come and go during a day or persist over so long? Maybe I'm being overly paranoid.

My guess would be drool rash.

Dr. Google isn't helping, so I thought I'd turn to Dr. Hellobee. Our 22-month-old gets a red bumpy rash around his mouth that comes and goes. I've tried to see if it's related to any particular food, but it seems somewhat unpredictable. Sometimes he wakes up with it, sometimes not. There is no particular food that seems to trigger it (for example sometimes he'll drink milk and be fine, sometimes rash). He has no other symptoms of allergies (normal diapers, etc.) I'd say it's been around for the past 5 months or so.

Any one else dealt with this? Is it any allergy? Should I do an elimination diet to identify the problem or just take him to the allergist?
