@Orchid: that is a great deal! Also, my mom kept all my nephews Thomas trains and tracks and handed them down to me. They are almost 20 years old and still in great shape!

@erinbaderin: Same! We have a ton of regular trains, but he's received quite a few Thomas characters and he seems to use them more for now because he knows their names; but it confuses him that he has like 4 Thomas, 3 James, & 3 Percy's along with singles of other characters. :P

They might get into Thomas, though - both of our kids have gone through intense Thomas faces. We have a mix of trains, but the Thomas ones get more play because we “know” them all.

@Orchid: it's held up great to the 2 year old beating them on the train table or floor or used as building blocks. :P

I just think wood tracks in general will hold up better than the plastic ones to anything but being soaked (son has soaked 1 piece in the dog water bowl and it swelled some)

@PinkElephant: thanks! This was very helpful. We are not into Thomas at all. Right now LO calls the two trains we have “trains with faces”.
My husband seems to think that Thomas sets are a good quality and that we can live with the “faces” for a sturdy set that will last two or maybe more kiddos. It seems like Brio is also a good quality but to have that many pieces of Brio is likely to cost more than $225.

@Orchid: I think it’s a good deal for the pieces but that’s more pieces than we could use/have room for.

@Orchid: I just bought a brand new kidcraft train set with a table for about half that price but like others have said if your child is specifically into thomas trains then it is a good deal

The Thomas expansion packs are more expensive than regular ones too. So at the hobby shop we go to each set is $25-75 for the smaller to medium ones and the big/elaborate ones are over $100 sometimes.

ETA: The tracks and train shed alone is $100-200 depending on how much was with the original set. But this is all based off my local prices

I voted "yes" but would say it depends how into Thomas the Train your LO is. If the character is what matters, it's a great deal because character-specific sets become unavailable after their first manufacturing run, so to amass such a huge collection would take a lot of time and money (to buy from different sources).

If it's just trains you are after, it's probably not a great deal - you can cobble together real Brio and Amazon matches for less. The key for trains is having PLENTY of track.

Not 100% sure but my MIL just bought a brand new wooden set at s specialty train store for DS for Christmas this year and it came to $90 for maybe half of what is described here....so my thought is $225 is reasonable for new or very very good condition? But I don’t know much so I’ll defer to others who sleep eat and breathe trains!!

Is this a good deal?? It is listed at $275 but I offered $225 and it was accepted. I’ve never bought train sets before so I’m not sure if it’s a good buy.
