That's great news! They can still spit up a lot but at least your baby won't be in pain anymore!

@blackbird: It seems like the Maalox is helping, so we will probably start on the Zantac this week. Ped wanted us to try the Maalox to see if it was an acid issue...I think it is! He is still spitting up, but doesn't seem to be in as much pain. We are going to watch his BM's for constipation...so far they have been really runny which is why we thought Dairy Allergy first. But, we tested his stool and its negative for blood which is good!

zantac was the shit!!!! I hope you get something that works! I would just hate to trade one issue (Reflux) for another (awful constipation) without necessarily addressing it first

@blackbird: She did. I asked about switching immediately to a Sensitive formula and she suggested Enfamil AR instead. I am only asking about making my own, so we can kind of hit two issues at once. A more gentle formula AND the rice to help with the reflux. If the Maalox does help over the weekend, we will be on Zantac!

I would only do it if your ped suggested it. It can cause constipation issues.

Our ped suggested Zantac or, if it worsened, Prevacid.

@Mrs Green Grass: That is so helpful because we typically make a batch for the day so the air bubbles can dissipate. Are you able to make a 24 hour batch with the AR formula? Or you do have to do that one bottle at a time as well?

@Madison43: Totally understand the balking...but now...there is no judgement! Haha. I just want my baby to feel better, I will do anything!!

Adding rice cereal to increase thickness for babies with reflux is totally warranted and is not a hazard! The only problem won't it is that milk enzymes break down rice so it only stays thick for a short time so you can't pre-make it. But I'm not sure if formula would do the same thing to it. You could always test it out and see... Also FYI, if the med doesn't seem to work, ask for a different one after two weeks. They all work a little differently. Prevacid worked best for us.

I used enfamil ar and really liked it.

I think I mentioned that our ped recommended adding a small amount of rice to LO's bottle when we switched to a hypoallergenic formula which was much thinner than her regular formula and caused reflux issues. If I didn't had a kid with reflux, I would have balked at rice in a bottle, but it thickened the formula enough for her to keep it down.

Skip adding rice unless absolutely necessary\ and use formulas instead.

We did add rice to bottles because LO was getting so far below on the weight chart, but the doctor said she hardly ever recommends it due to the choking hazard.

So, the Ped is pretty sure that DS has reflux. She told us to do Maalox twice a day over the weekend and if that helps him, we will start on Zantac since babes shouldn't take Maalox long term. We are also switching formulas. I asked if a Sensitivity formula would be good, she said yes, or even the Added Rice formulas.

Tell me if this is a bad idea...

Adding my own rice cereal to a sensitive formula. Should I just not even worry with it and get the generic Enfamil AR?
