@Beyond2: Yea, then I would definitely try to offer in person so if he thinks its a low ball offer then you can quickly raise your offer and not miss the truck.

i don't think it's bad considering the KBB value, but if you really want it and you're sure he's taken care of it, i would probably offer a little closer to KBB value.

No, that sounds fine. I had my car listed for $15,999 last year and excepted $14k, even kbb was 16 but I just needed it sold fast. You never know what his situation is--give it a try! Even if people have looked at it, doesn't mean they have given an offer.

I don't think that's too low ball. With houses they say you shouldn't go less than 80% of the asking price because that becomes insulting, and you are still above that. But expect him to counter. I'm sure he checked KBB too and knows what the truck is worth and with multiple interested buyers he likely won't sell it for $700 below KBB value. Especially if it is extremely well maintained.

@Thehistoryofus: we would be willing to pay up to 14000 for it. Like I said he took great care of it! For our price range it is the best kept truck we've found in the past 6 months or so we've been looking. 13000 would be nice though because we wouldn't have to come up with as much more to pay taxes and register/insure it.

I think its all in how you offer. I would maybe see if you could offer in person (not over email) so that you can read his reaction. I also would explain that you have pulled up KBB and several other options that are listed and based on those comparisons you would like to offer 13,000.

What is the max you would be willing to pay for the truck. Would you be willing to come up if he offers to say meet in the middle which would be around the KBB price?

That's not lowball. When Mr. Jacks was selling his truck for 10K, someone offered 8K, which we felt was pretty lowball.

We currently have a pretty lowball offer on a house, but we are willing to negotiate upwards. I always feel like there is no harm in starting a little lower than what you are willing to pay.

I think 13,000 is a reasonable offer.

I try to never pay more than KBB. The worst he can say is "no" and then you just ask him to shoot you a number back.

I think it's fine to offer lower. You won't know what he will accept unless you ask. If he doesn't like it, he will counter offer. He wants to sell it as badly as you want it.

My husband and I are currently planning to buy a truck. The truck was listed by a private party for $14,700. According to kelly blue book, the truck is worth $13,700. We met with the guy and he seems really honest and up front and he has REALLY taken care of the vehicle. He said he would be willing to work with us, but he isn't willing to give it away. He said he had 6 people look at the vehicle since he listed it and one made a really low ball offer. We want to offer him $13,000 but also want him to realize we're truly interested. Do you think our offer would be insulting at $1,700 under his asking price? What would you offer if you really want the vehicle but also want the lowest price possible?
