I bought a house with a vent over the stove and our first reaction was we need somewhere for the microwave. We ended up redoing our cabinets and making room for one. Is it possible your microwave is too close to your stove?

Do you have a realtor you've used previously or plan to use? Or a friend who's in real estate in your area?

There were a lot of things we thought we HAD to do before we moved...some of the things we expected to be a big deal weren't, and some of things we needed to do we didn't expect.

Our realtor works closely with a stager, so she visited, gave us like a 9 page long list of recommendations, and then our realtor told us what was realistically worth the cost (removing cracked patio and putting in sod) and what we could probably skip on (all new/matching mini blinds).

It could depend on your area and price point.

Personally, we didn't upgrade our kitchen. We thought it was going to be a must, but the realtor said in our price bracket, we *might* break even. And then what if the buyer hated the choices we made? Sometimes it's better to leave it to the buyer to make the changes so they get exactly what they want.

It's most annoying when I'm boiling water and the condensation drops down from the microwave but I like that it doesn't use counter space so I'm pretty neutral.

As a 5 foot tall person who doesn't own a microwave, I wouldn't care less. But those over stove setups are totally impossible for a short person - I can't stand them. But again, I don't even own a microwave.

I think it wouldn't matter much in the sale of a home.

I've lived in homes with all different setups, and my favorite was having the microwave in a cabinet. The only necessary adjustment needed was an electrical outlet inside the cabinet. I loved that it was not visible or taking up counter space.

I don't mind our microwave over the stove, but I cook and bake frequently so we're considering doing a range hood instead. We haven't pulled the trigger on it because we don't know where to put the microwave. The counter isn't an option because of aesthetic reasons.

Thanks everyone! I don't think it would actually make or break a purchase, but I think it might affect the value. Now that I know how annoying it is, if I was the buyer I'd want the microwave gone, which is probably expensive. I have no idea what's behind it and whether the wall back there has to be re-tiled or repainted.

Not a lot of counter space in the kitchen though, and as much as I like the idea of building it into something, that would mean major changes to the cabinets... I know a few people that have no microwave at all and don't miss it, but most people do expect it these days so maybe it should stay put.

I think its more of a preference issue. Higher end homes will have built into a wall or island. Mid range homes may be over the stove.

I think the question is where else would you put it? I think they're standard in houses (every apartment and house I've lived in in the US has had one, and I've lived in a lot of places), so to go without would require a special circumstance.

That said, I really like the idea of no microwave, like @Mrs. Pen said. However, I feel like your house would have to be very far outside the norm to get away with that set up and have it considered an asset. I think that it would not be out of place in a house with features like solar energy, xeriscaped garden, gray water reuse system, rain collection, composting area, etc. I think a house like that would be amazing, but if you're not going that direction, I would make sure to have a working microwave that was not taking up a workspace in the kitchen.

I wouldn't NOT buy your house because of the oven/ microwave set up, but I don't think you should share all the issues you have had with yours. We had a similar set up at our old house and didn't have the same issues.

I'd say no matter what it needs to off the counter. In a high end kitchen/house it should be built into the wall or an island and there should be a range hood. In a medium range house over the oven is fine.

As someone who has worked for a developer- it is a pro to have a designated microwave. The preferred place wouldn't necessarily be above the range for a lot of people, but I know that most potential buyers did want a microwave.

I actually have never given it much thought! We have always had it over the oven and it's been fine. I'd much prefer that to having the microwave someplace less convenient. We use it a lot so I am fine wth it not looking as pretty as a nice hood.

I agree with others that it depends. I also think most people who do a lot of cooking would prefer a real vent, while people who cook less would prefer the microwave. But I don't think it is a make-or-break thing for selling the house (unless someone is looking for universal design, as mentioned above).

I'm not a fan, I worry about spilling something hot on myself accidentally.

Also, over the stove microwaves go against universal design, something to think about for resale (although I know lots of people prefer it over the stove to save space as pp mentioned).

We are completely remodeling our kitchen, and we decided to do a range hood over our stove instead of a microwave. After researching it, I decided a range hood provides better air filtering and I think it looks nicer. I would never have a microwave sitting out on the counter though, so we are installing an under-counter microwave in our island.

I picked popcorn because my answer is "it depends". I prefer a range hood over a microwave vent, BUT, a microwave is a necessity to me. So I would only put in a range hood if you have a convenient other option for where to put in a microwave.

Anyone else have a microwave over the stove? Do you think this is a good setup?

We have a microwave with a vent on the bottom hanging over the stove. It's not a real vent, just a filter. The only thing that vent does is overheat when we cook a lot, go off by itself, and refuse to stop until it's unplugged. We're going to sell our place eventually, and will have to do some work in the kitchen first. I wonder if we'd be doing the buyer a favor by taking this monstrosity down while we're at it, or if it's actually considered a good thing?
