Go for it. It would be different if you saw them all the time, but since that's not the case I think you are totally fine.

I think its totally fair game.I would confirm with his family that there are no major objections on their part and then go for it!

I'd definitely use it as well. Narrowing down a name is hard enough as is, it'll be close to impossible if you consider every relative or friend that you hardly even see anyway. I say go for it!

Oh I'd definitely use it -- but to be safe you could check with your nephew and the boy's mom just to let them know what you are thinking! :) I'd take it as a compliment if someone used the same name as my LO for their kid! :)

You've never met him which makes me think that you're not terribly close with this family. I'd say the name is fair game.

FWIW, my husband and his step 2nd cousin have the same name. We don't associate much with that side of the family so it's never once been an issue.

I'd still use it (and this is coming from someone who had an irrational freak-out when a distant Facebook acquaintance gave her son the same name we had planned). My LO's name is the same as my cousin's significant other. We see each other once a year and it's no big deal!

I'm a teacher so it's hard not to have associations with names at all. Our girl name we like is pretty popular so we've chosen a middle name and she could go by both names - think Sarah Jane Jones going by Sarah-Jane (not the names) - could you do this?
I also agree with others that it depends on how often your kids are going to see each other/play together. Does the step-grandnephew go by a nickname? Could you call them Jacob & Jake if they are in the same place? There's really a whole bunch of variables.
I'm just praying no one close to us chooses our names before we have our LOs

Thanks for opinions! I've actually never met the child! I met his mom for first time this past Christmas, and her child was with his dad that day. Christmas is the only time normally they would be in same room possibly.

I am pretty sure I would use it. Obviously you aren't that close that you just now remembered his name. I assume this isn't a kid that is going to be at your sons birthday parties or anything.

We're in a similar predicament. William is a family name that's used often, on both sides of my husband's family. I like the name okay but his cousin, who lives in New York now, has a son who is five named William. They aren't close, DH and his cousin, but I still feel a little weird using a name that's been used so recently.

I think it would depend on how close you are with them. I wouldn't say it is completely off the table though, if you love it I say go for it! What does your DH think about naming the baby this, and you knowing someone with the name?

How close are you to him? If its someone you see on a regular basis, I'd probably look for other names. If he's a far-flung relative you see 2-3 times a year, I wouldn't worry about it. The LOs sound like they'll have different last names too, since it's your sister's step-grandson. I'd hesitate if they'd both be John Smith but that doesn't sound like itd be the case.

Maybe you'll have a girl anyways and it won't matter lol.

Seriously though, I think it depends on how close you are to your family. Of course if you truely love it you name your baby whatever you want.

Maybe you can use it as a middle name?

I really think picking out baby's name is the hardest part about having a baby lol

The hubs and I have always known what we would name a baby girl, and always struggled with what we would name a baby boy. In the past few months we have fallen in love with a name. We don't know what we are having yet, but if boy, that would be it.

So I'm laying in bed last night when a horrible thought comes to mind - my nephew, who is only 4 years younger than me, got married a year ago and now has a 3 year old stepson. I've never met the child, but just remembered his name is the same as our top pick! So I technically have a great-nephew with that name.

Would it be completely insensitive and horrible to consider naming my child the same name as my sister's step-grandson?
