@mrs. wagon: I had the same thing happen to me, but it wasn't mastitis. It was like you said, massaging the breasts too had trying to get the clogged duct out. It took about 24 hours to get all back to normal.

Thanks everyone!! No fever and I feel a lot better after some rest and Advil, so I doubt it's full blown mastitis... I don't feel the pain anymore so well have to see if that continues after the Advil wears off!

Sounds like clogged ducts. I had this a few days ago. I couldn't "feel" the clog but my right boob was super super sore. Kinda like it was bruised! I thought I had massaged it so much that I bruised it because I couldn't feel the hard lumps. So I just kept nursing on that side and pumping as much as possible. It just cleared up this morning! I went to pump this morning and it wasn't sore at all. If you have mastitis, you'll KNOW. In addition to the achy boob, you'll get flu-like symptoms...fever, chills, achy body. It sounds like you just have a clogged duct. But if you start getting these flu-like symptoms, then you should call your OB and they will prescribe you antibiotics.

For now, I say keep nursing on that side (have her start nursing on that side first since babies tend to suck harder in the beginning of a nursing session) and then pump as much as possibe. Also, take a HOT shower and massage your boob while letting the hot water run down your body. The heat totally helps release the clog!

Hope you feel better soon!!!

I had what you're describing, last weekend. I was so paranoid that I was going to get mastitis for the second time so I heated up wet wash cloths in the microwave all day and massaged my breasts for 2 days and eventually it went away.
When I had mastitis I nearly screamed when my breast would bump into something, felt like I had the flu, then I had chills and a high fever and it progressed quickly.

Hmm, it could be mastitis. When I had it, my right breast was engorged and hard as a rock, but no amount of pumping or nursing would relieve it. About twelve hours later, I came down with chills, aches, and a fever. I think it was the sickest I'd ever felt. I remember shivering under several layers of blankets and crying because I felt so awful. Oh, and there was a red patch on my breast. I would definitely call the doctor in the morning. I hope you feel better and it's not mastitis :(

Hmmm...it doesn't sound like any fun, whatever it is!

When I had mastitis I did get the classic red, hot to the touch, hard plugged duct in one spot on one side. Then I went from feeling generally new-mom tired to oh-if-i-don't-lie-down-immediately-it-is-all-over tired, and got chills and shakes and a fever. Do you feel like that apart from the breast symptoms?

It is definitely worth a call to the doc in the am, just to make sure.

For me mastitis was just like having a clogged duct but felt so much worse. I had a high fever and chills that would not go away. I felt miserable and could barely function.

Hope that you feel better soon.

I felt like you're describing when I had clogged ducts. I never had a fever so I chalked the symptoms up to being run down. My husband took over for about 12 hours to let me sleep and I felt so much better. Can someone help you so you can get some extra sleep?

I also did this thing in the tub where I filled it with HOT water and kneeled in it. I massaged them while in there. It felt great and helped. I hope they heal soon! Be gentle for a while!

Do you have a temperature? I've never had it, but I think it comes with flu like symptoms too..?

I've never had mastitis before and I'm terrified to get it!! I've had plugged ducts but never mastitis... help me figure out if this is it!

Since yesterday my breasts have been very sore and tender. I noticed while pumping (at 3am) that my breasts weren't emptying very well. I haven't noticed any redness or large lumps but while massaging, I do notice some lumpiness in general, but very very deep inside. I took a hot shower and massaged, and nursed, and pumped and it still hurts. When I have let-down it is noticeably more painful. Both breasts hurt but my right one hurts a lot more than my left. And milk is still flowing from both.

I'm wondering if maybe my massaging and breast compressions while nursing and pumping (which I tend to be very aggressive about because I am.. wait for it.. terrified of getting mastitis!) has possibly bruised the tissue? Is that possible?

I don't think I have a fever but I am achy all over and very tired.

Any thoughts?? I'm gonna call the OBGYN tomorrow as soon as they open.
