Thanks for the advice. I got a scrip called in. I looked again in the mirror and it was getting red.

I tend to have oversupply on the affected side and under supply on the other. So I'm worried about making that worse by starting on the affected side. Oddly, LO prefers the other side (maybe the flow is easier to handle?)

@jedeve: check out our posts on mastitis:

if you don't have a fever over 101 yet, you might be able to treat this yourself! taking hot showers and using warm compresses really helped me... i got a lot of clogged ducts. hopefully that's what it is even if you can't feel a hard lump.

Yep, the times that I've had a milder form have been like that. I feel nauseous then super tired and redness on breast that's not necessarily hard. This is what I do: feed baby on affected side with chin towards red area. Then pump both sides to get as empty as I can. Then the rest of the day I nurse both sides always starting on the affected side. At the end of the day before I go to bed pump again, and generally by the next morning it is better, sometimes just a tad sore. Also, try to drink lots of water and if you can stomach it add some raw garlic to whatever you eat today. That, and try to rest as best you can.

@Mrs. Bee: not sure. I just feel super sick. My breast isn't hard like with a plugged duct though.

do you have a fever? when i had mastitis, it was one of my most sick times of my life! to be on the safe side, i would nurse as much as possible, pump, apply warm moist heat... it could just be a clogged duct (which can be super uncomfortable too) but that could turn into mastitis, and you don't want that!

I have a sore spot in my breast but no redness. This morning I woke up feeling nauseous. Does that sound like mastitis?

I did go four hours without breastfeeding yesterday. (A three hour wait in urgent care for some impacted ear wax that they couldn't get rid of and now I have to go to an ent. Lovely.)

I just want to crawl in bed and stay there!
